GDF15 - the culprit causing severe morning sickness

According to research results recently published in the journal Nature, a group of international scientists from the UK, US... discovered that the cause of severe morning sickness originates from a hormone called GDF15, which affects the mother's brain, causing nausea and vomiting.

Researchers found that women who experienced severe vomiting had significantly higher levels of GDF15 during pregnancy than those who did not experience symptoms.

More than two-thirds of pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting during the first trimester. About 2% of women are hospitalized for severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. This condition can lead to malnutrition, increasing the risk of premature birth, preeclampsia, etc., threatening the lives of mother and fetus.

The researchers suggest that long-term exposure to GDF15 before pregnancy may have a protective effect, making women less susceptible to sudden surges in the hormone as the fetus develops. Alternatively, drugs that block the effects of the hormone could be used, which are being tested in cancer patients whose loss of appetite and vomiting are also caused by GDF15, if clinical trials show that the drug is safe during pregnancy.
