Reuters reported that El Salvador President Nayib Bukele has just declared a state of emergency in anticipation of Hurricane Pilar, which is forecast to cause heavy rain and flooding along the country's coastal areas in the next 48 hours.

The government of El Salvador has issued a “red” alert, the highest on a four-level warning scale, and ordered the temporary closure of many schools.

The emergency decree will allow the government to allocate funds to respond to the situation. Due to the impact of the storm, some areas in the eastern and central coastal areas of El Salvador have been flooded.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicts that Hurricane Pilar will be near the coast of El Salvador on the evening of October 31 or early morning of November 1.

NHC said winds are currently near 65km/h, and could increase in intensity over the next few days and possibly become a tropical storm by October 31.

Honduras also issued a tropical storm watch for its Pacific coast.
