Germany, Singapore and the "historic handshake" at G20

Singapore and Germany have upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership to promote closer cooperation in areas of mutual interest such as security, artificial intelligence (AI) and clean energy.

The two countries issued a Joint Statement on Strategic Partnership following a meeting between Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his German counterpart Olaf Scholz on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil on November 18.

The Singapore-Germany Strategic Partnership has five pillars, including cooperation in intelligence, security (cyber), defense, politics; trade, investment, transport, digital; energy transition, green economy, climate; science, research, technology, innovation; multi-level cooperation towards the future.

With the new level of relations, the two countries will increase high-level visits and exchanges due to "growing strategic concerns". The two militaries will strengthen cooperation in digitalization and cybersecurity, and establish secure communication lines for information exchange.

Singapore and Germany have established a Sustainable and Resilient Future Partnership 2022 with a commitment to promote cooperation in areas such as climate change, defence and the economy .
