Record number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan
The year 2024 will continue to witness a strong boom in the Vietnam-Japan tourism market. According to newly released data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) in Vietnam, the total number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan has reached 621,173, an increase of 108.2% compared to 2023.
This is the second consecutive year that the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan has reached a record high, reflecting the strong recovery after the pandemic and the growing interest of Vietnamese people in the land of cherry blossoms.
Vietnam currently ranks 10th among the markets sending the most tourists to Japan and 4th in Southeast Asia, after Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore.

In 2024, except for January, which coincided with the Lunar New Year holiday, all other months recorded the highest number of visitors ever compared to the same period. This shows that the demand for tourism in Japan is spreading strongly, surpassing the usual seasonality.
The popularity of direct flights from Vietnam to major Japanese cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagoya... has contributed to creating convenience, shortening travel time and promoting the growing wave of independent travel.
Not only the quantity, the quality of trips has also improved as Vietnamese people begin to explore deeper into the localities, experience more with indigenous culture and traditional Japanese cuisine .
Outstanding trends of Vietnamese tourists when coming to Japan
According to statistics from travel companies and industry data, Vietnamese tourists to Japan have not only increased in number but also seen a clear change in travel trends.
Cherry blossom season (March/April) and red leaf season (October/November) are still the traditional peak seasons, attracting a large number of visitors to big cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto... However, besides the central cities, many localities with unique natural scenery and distinctive cultures are also emerging as favorite destinations.

Prefectures such as Hokkaido, Gifu (Takayama, Shirakawa-go) and Nagano (Matsumoto, Kamikochi) have seen an increase in visitors thanks to their mountain scenery, snow cover and fresh air. The area around Mount Fuji is also a particularly popular destination, not only for its iconic landscape but also for its "very Japanese" experiences such as snow viewing, hot spring bathing (onsen), ancient village experiences and indigenous culture.
New trends are also taking shape:
Family group travel: large proportion, high demand for convenient, child-friendly services.
Online booking and cashless payment: becoming key factors when choosing a service.
Fly directly to local areas: expand destinations beyond traditional cities.
In the post-pandemic context and the strong recovery of the international tourism industry, Japan is making efforts to promote strategies revolving around keywords: sustainable tourism, expanding spending, and promoting attracting visitors to the locality.
With the growing interest from Vietnamese tourists, this could be an opportunity for the two countries to strengthen cooperation not only in cultural exchange but also in investment, service development and localization of tourism experiences.
