Monitoring data shows that this afternoon (July 15), the water level upstream of Hoa Binh Lake was about 108.56m; 3.56m higher than the highest water level before the flood (early flood period).

According to the regulations in the Prime Minister 's Inter-reservoir Operation Procedures on the Red River Basin, the highest water level of Hoa Binh Hydropower Reservoir during the early flood period (from June 15 to July 19) is not more than 105m.

To ensure the safety of the dam and downstream area, Hoa Binh Hydropower Company opened a bottom spillway to bring the water level back to a safe level, while still ensuring the power generation requirements for production.

In the context of prolonged rain in the Northern region, the water level of Hoa Binh Hydropower Reservoir is forecasted to increase. The bottom spillway gate is expected to continue to be opened to bring the water level back to the highest level before the flood (main flood season) of 101m according to the procedure.

Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant has a normal water level design of 117m (compared to sea level), maximum water level of 120m, dead water level of 80m. Hoa Binh Hydropower Dam has 12 spillways and 8 generators with a capacity of 1,920MW.

From June 2022, Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant will have to open the bottom spillway. In 2023, due to low rainfall, Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant’s reservoir will also be “dry” and will have to operate at a moderate level.
