Simultaneously releasing overflow from 7 reservoirs in Ha Tinh to cope with heavy rain

(Baohatinh.vn) - 7 large reservoirs in Ha Tinh will be released to lower water levels in response to forecasts of heavy rain caused by a tropical depression that is about to strengthen into storm No. 5.

From the morning of August 24, 7 large reservoirs in Ha Tinh will simultaneously overflow in anticipation of heavy rain.

Director of Nam Ha Tinh Irrigation Company, Tran Manh Cuong, said: The unit will simultaneously operate spillway discharge at 7 large reservoirs in the province, including the following reservoirs: Boc Nguyen, Thuong Song Tri, Da Han, Khe Xai, Song Rac, Kim Son, and Tau Voi.

The proactive release of water from 7 reservoirs is to proactively respond to the forecast of heavy rain caused by the tropical depression that is about to strengthen into a storm (storm No. 5) from August 24 to the end of August 27 with forecasted rainfall from 150 - 300 mm, in some places over 600 mm.

The spillway discharge starts at 9am on August 24, with a discharge flow of 5 - 120 m3 /second. The end time depends on weather conditions and lake water levels.

As of the end of August 22, the water level of Boc Nguyen Lake was at 17.39 m, with a capacity of 14.94 million m3 ; Thuong Song Tri Lake was at 28.18 m, with a capacity of 12.64 million m3 ; Da Han Lake was at 34.57 m3 , with a capacity of 12.47 million m3 ; Khe Xai Lake was at 22 m, with a capacity of 7.1 million m3 ; Song Rac Lake was at 19.88 m, with a capacity of 71.13 million m3 ; Kim Son Lake was at 94.85 m, with a capacity of 13.31 million m3 ; Tau Voi Lake was at 14.13 m, with a capacity of 5.43 million m3 .

Proactive spillway discharge helps reduce the water level in the lake to proactively respond to forecasts of heavy rain, ensuring the safety of the project and downstream areas.

“Proactively releasing water from reservoirs is to control water levels, reduce pressure on projects, minimize flooding risks for downstream areas when heavy rain occurs, and protect people's lives and property,” said Tran Manh Cuong, Director of Nam Ha Tinh Irrigation Company.

Along with the proactive spillway discharge of large reservoirs, the water level of some small reservoirs such as Da Cat, Khe Lau, Khe Nay, Dam Mung... with free spillway is now approximately equal to the spillway threshold. In case of rain, the water level of these reservoirs will increase and flow through the free spillway with an estimated flow rate of 1 - 90 m3 /second.

As of the evening of August 22, the water level of Ngan Truoi Lake (Vu Quang Commune) - the largest reservoir in Ha Tinh - was at an elevation of 35.034/52 m, equivalent to a capacity of 234.721/775.7 million m3 ; the water level of Ke Go Lake (Cam Due Commune) was at an elevation of 25.13/32.5 m, equivalent to a capacity of 162.6/345 million m3 .

The water level in these two large reservoirs is quite low, so the amount of rain this time is not a concern. However, the reservoir management unit will closely monitor the weather situation to make appropriate adjustments.
