TPO - The Literature exam for 10th grade students at a school in Ho Chi Minh City required students to discuss the wild lifestyle of today's youth. Experts said that the exam should have a section to explain the words because wild is a slang word that not all students understand.

Recently, the mid-term 1 Literature exam for 10th grade students of Mac Dinh Chi High School (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City) caused a stir on social networks.

Accordingly, the exam only has one question, requiring students to write an essay discussing the current lifestyle of young people. The time limit is 45 minutes. Many social media users praised the exam for being topical, catching the "trend" of young people.

However, experts have mixed opinions on this matter. A Literature teacher at a high school in Thu Duc City believes that, according to the 2018 GeneralEducation Program, teachers can give short tests, requiring students to discuss an issue or a social phenomenon so that students can express their opinions.

However, with the above test, this teacher thinks that "phuong tarpaulin" is slang. Therefore, the test maker should have a section to explain the words for students and put the word "phuong tarpaulin" in quotation marks. "The test that imposes a "phuong tarpaulin" lifestyle on today's youth is not appropriate. Instead, the test maker should ask for a discussion about the "phuong tarpaulin" lifestyle of a segment of youth," this teacher said.

Another Literature teacher at a high school in the inner city of Ho Chi Minh City (who requested not to be named) also shared the same opinion.

This teacher acknowledged that the test was too much for 10th graders because it only took 45 minutes. The test also did not have a reading comprehension section to identify the characteristics of the genre according to the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program, but only had a single writing section.

"The test would be better if there was a narrative sentence at the top, pointing out some of the negative manifestations of young people, citing real life examples before leading into the question. Discussing a negative phenomenon is also a double-edged sword. For young 10th graders, asking them to discuss a social phenomenon like this needs to be done with caution. The test may interest students, but the true educational value of the test needs to be discussed again," said this teacher.
