This year's 12th graders will take the high school graduation exam with a new format.

Some teachers believe that artificial intelligence (AI) is an issue that has been mentioned in two textbooks: Connecting Knowledge with Life and Creative Horizons. So, is it true that the Ministry of Education and Training has used textbook materials to put into the exam questions?

THESIS IS DIFFERENT FROM THE MATERIAL

Teacher Le Hai Minh, who teaches literature in Binh Thanh District (HCMC), said that the reference questions still ensure the regulation of not using materials in textbooks.

Mr. Hai Minh said that not using the materials in the textbook means not quoting those materials and requiring students to do reading comprehension questions or write about the content and art in those materials, because that would not be in line with the spirit of the 2018 literature program. The reference questions require writing essays on the topics taught, not taking materials from the textbook, so it is not against the policy.

"The question asked students to write about artificial intelligence. And it is a familiar issue, close to students. Among many issues, we chose a current issue to ask students to write about," the above teacher commented.

Master Nguyen Phuoc Bao Khoi, lecturer at the Faculty of Literature, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said: "This is a very wrong way of thinking because teachers cannot distinguish between two basic concepts: "linguistic material" and "argumentative problem/thesis".

Lecturers from Ho Chi Minh City University of Education pointed out that in the literature program, one of the requirements for grade 12 is to be able to write an argumentative essay on an issue related to youth. Artificial intelligence is an important issue for grade 12 students and from this issue, a number of other derivative issues can be formed (future career challenges when artificial intelligence develops, the advantages and disadvantages of using artificial intelligence features in work processing, the impact of technological life on family, etc.).

Therefore, according to Master Khoi, depending on the choice and direction of exploitation of the test maker, this issue can completely appear, even appear many times, even in the official high school graduation exam.

NOT FAIR TO STUDENTS STUDYING ANOTHER BOOK SERIES?

On the other hand, Ms. Nguyen Tran Hanh Nguyen, head of the literature group at Trung Vuong High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), said that Official Dispatch 3935 guiding the implementation of secondaryeducation tasks for the 2024-2025 school year of the Ministry of Education and Training requires that the literature subject not use textbooks as materials for assessment and periodic testing. This means that the materials in the questions for both the reading comprehension and writing assessment tests are not included in the three current textbooks.

Therefore, teachers at Trung Vuong High School believe that if the writing test, which has a high score, has discussion topics that are already in the texts that students have learned in the textbooks, it does not fully demonstrate the spirit of "not using materials in textbooks". Not to mention that it would be unfair to students who study a set of books that do not have related texts.

Ms. Hanh Nguyen said: "If it is a regulation, it needs to be implemented correctly in all parts of the test, not just the material for the reading comprehension part."

Sharing the same view, teacher Dao Dinh Tuan commented that the social argumentative essay (4 points) in the reference exam for the 2025 high school graduation exam recently announced by the Ministry of Education and Training on the topic of artificial intelligence is a topic in the 11th grade literature textbook, volume 2 of the book series Connecting knowledge with life, pages 71, 72, 73, 74 and page 79. In addition, artificial intelligence is also the content of the 11th grade literature textbook, volume 1 of the book series Creative Horizon, pages 44, 45 with the title "AI technology of the present and the future".

Meanwhile, according to Mr. Tuan, the reference exam (2023) for the high school graduation exam from 2025 has a social argumentative essay (4 points) "Life often has difficulties and challenges; facing or giving up is each person's choice" which is not in any literature textbook. So, with the recent reference exam, did the Ministry of Education and Training comply with the regulation of not using language materials in textbooks?

How to review with sample literature questions

How should grade 12 students determine how to study and review to adapt to the new way of giving questions and achieve the best results?

Change the way of learning from equipping knowledge of lessons and programs to focusing on practicing test-taking skills. These are skills of reading and understanding texts, writing paragraphs and writing social argumentative essays.

For the reading comprehension section (4 points), students need to have a firm grasp of the genres of texts including poetry, stories, memoirs (essays, memoirs, prose), drama, argumentative texts... that have been studied throughout the years in high school, even in middle school, closely following the 12th grade program. When studying any genre, students should have a systematic overview of the entire literary knowledge characteristics of that genre. In addition, they need to have a firm grasp of knowledge about Vietnamese (practice Vietnamese in the 12th grade program), master knowledge and practice how to answer questions related to rhetorical devices...

Strengthening the practice of writing literary argumentative paragraphs (2 points). With the social argumentative question (4 points), the advice for students is to have many ways to orient the practice of skills in the general social argumentative essay style, closely following the knowledge of essay styles and how to write social argumentative essays in the 12th grade program, in the writing section.

In addition, when practicing, you need to pay attention to the very new requirements in each question of the illustration test and the instructions on how to answer the marked answer.
