Work out while making a living
"I was born in 1990. Many people gossiped and teased me about my family background, I just kept quiet and tried my best," Phan Chi Thanh confided. Since 6th grade, Thanh has worked as a waiter in a restaurant to earn money. Thanh said: "I went to school from morning to noon, then came home. At around 1 pm, I went to work as a waiter until 1 am the next morning. At that time, I earned 700,000 VND per month, which was a lot of money for me."
Thanh's childhood was not as peaceful as his friends'. He was often looked down upon and ridiculed by others, and sometimes felt so frustrated that he cried. "But I got used to it," Thanh shared. He dropped out of school in the middle of 10th grade and started working to make a living. In 2010, Thanh went to Ho Chi Minh City and worked as a parking attendant for a coffee shop. With no place to stay, he slept right in front of the shop and continued working the next morning. After working as a parking attendant, Thanh became a construction worker, then a painter. Later, after saving up some money, he went to school to learn how to repair phones and stuck with this job for the longest time, more than 10 years.
In 2012, Thanh was introduced by his uncle to practice at the Quoc Thinh Cascadeur Club. Thanh shared: "Honestly, at that time, I only knew how to practice without a clear direction." It was not until 2018 that Thanh realized he was "passionate about being a stuntman." He started to have small roles, from gangsters to a few roles with dialogue. "Having a role and money to live on is enough to be happy," Thanh confided. He recalled in 2014, when he played an action role falling from a 4-meter high wall to the ground. This scene lasted many nights and he received more than 200,000 VND/night. "At that time, that was considered high," he said.
Recognizing Thanh's diligence in training, director Nguyen Quoc Thinh - Head of the Quoc Thinh Cascadeur Club, created conditions for him to develop his abilities and thinking. The director commented: "Thanh is diligent, taking advantage of both training and working. He repairs phones, buys a house on installments, and takes care of his grandparents. Such a filial boy deserves to receive many good things."
NEVER STOP LEARNING
After a period of working, Thanh was gradually trusted by director Quoc Thinh to be assigned the role of action director in television dramas. With a professional working style, he continued to take on the role of action director for many movies. Thanh modestly said: "Before, I never dared to call myself an action director because I felt I still had a lot to learn." Only later, when he had accumulated enough experience performing action scenes for many movies, did Thanh boldly call himself an "action director".

Director Quoc Thinh commented: "Thanh always renews himself". He further explained: "While many people often cut and paste and imitate fighting scenes in foreign films to make them their own, Thanh is different. He watches to learn, then applies his thinking to apply to each film and each character's fate in a practical way".
He also emphasized that Thanh was very careful when reading the script and working with the director, always grasping the story and understanding the character's personality to stage the action scenes appropriately. "Action does not mean fighting randomly or just for show, but must be done in a way that makes the audience feel good, real and suitable for the character's true self," director Quoc Thinh explained.
Thanh shared: "I learn every day, often read stories about characters who overcome adversity to succeed, and use that as motivation for myself. I have never stopped learning." He also added that his future goal is to continue learning and improving himself to become a film director.
