Warning signs that your body is consuming too much salt

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên20/12/2024

Salt helps the body maintain fluid balance inside and outside cells, known as cellular homeostasis.

However, if we eat too much salt, it will lead to dehydration, according to Verywell Health .

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that adults consume less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day, which is equivalent to about 1 teaspoon of salt.

In particular, people with high blood pressure need to further reduce the amount of salt in their diet.

Mr. James Myhre and Mr. Dennis Sifris, doctors in the US, pointed out some signs when the body consumes too much salt.

muối

According to the World Health Organization, you should not eat more than 5 grams of salt per day.

Thirst is one of the signs of eating too much salt.

If you eat too much salt, your body will pull water from your cells to compensate, leading to dehydration.

Increased thirst is one symptom of dehydration. Other symptoms include dry mouth, dry skin, and sunken eyes due to loss of water in the tissues.

Headache

This is because your body becomes dehydrated and the blood vessels in your brain become dilated. You may also feel dizzy, tired, and have difficulty concentrating.

If your blood pressure gets too high, you may experience a severe headache along with other symptoms such as vomiting and chest pain.

Tired

Hypernatremia often causes fatigue and muscle weakness. When the sodium level in the blood is too high, the body loses its fluid balance. This causes the brain to swell, causing symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, and weakness.

Heart palpitations

When the amount of sodium in the blood is too high, it can cause an imbalance of electrolytes, causing the heart to beat irregularly. This condition is called arrhythmia.

Swollen feet are also a sign of leg edema.

Abdominal distension and edema

When you eat too much salt, your tissues retain more water than is excreted in your urine.

Fluid retention can cause swelling in the face, especially around the eyes. In people with severe heart, liver, or kidney disease, it can lead to fluid overload in the lower legs, ankles, and feet. This condition is called peripheral edema.

Additionally, a diet high in sodium can also cause bloating and gas.

High blood pressure

When we eat too much salt, our bodies retain water, increasing the pressure on our blood vessels and causing high blood pressure.

If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to many dangerous complications such as heart disease and stroke. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), eating more than 5 grams of salt per day is very dangerous.

Sleep disorders

Excess water can obstruct the airway while lying down, causing sleep apnea.

In addition, high blood pressure also causes symptoms such as chest pain and headaches, making it difficult for us to sleep.

Salt even affects the hormone norepinephrine, a sleep regulator, making sleep shallow and easily startled.
