Suspend a duck restaurant in Ben Thanh market
On July 14, a number of social media platforms shared a post by a customer who had an "unpleasant" experience at Ben Thanh Market (HCMC).
Specifically, the customer said he went to a stall in the market to buy duck noodles and duck salad with a total bill of 1 million VND. Of which, 4 bowls of noodles (no meat, lots of bamboo shoots) cost 240,000 VND, a portion of lean, boneless duck salad cost 760,000 VND.

According to this customer, he had been a regular at this restaurant since he was a child and thought that all the stalls in the market had their prices listed so he trusted them and did not ask for the price in advance. However, when he was charged a total of one million VND, he was very surprised.
Seeing that the restaurant did not have a bill, the customer asked again and only received a piece of paper with a rough list of dishes and unclear calculations. When he brought the food home, the customer weighed the duck meat he received and it weighed about 0.5kg.
Thinking that this price was too high, the customer was upset and shared it on social media.
The post quickly attracted attention from the online community with many mixed opinions. Many customers who had visited the food court in the market also complained that some food stalls had unreasonable prices compared to the general market.

After receiving the feedback, Ben Thanh Market Management Board quickly investigated and clarified.
On July 16, speaking to Dan Tri reporter, a representative of Ben Thanh Market Management Board said that they had proactively invited the business household to work. The incident occurred at counter number 1162. When the customer came to buy goods, the business household owner was not present and the assistant directly sold to the customer.
At the meeting, the Management Board drew up a record of violations against this business household for selling goods at prices not listed, specifically at prices higher than those listed in the market regulations. In the report, the household owner and the business person both admitted their violations.
According to information from the market's violation handling team, this unit has proposed suspending the business activities of the violating household for 3 days. However, the specific suspension level from 1 to 7 days is still being considered and reviewed by the Management Board and a final decision will be made at the upcoming meeting.
The management board said that the business suspension and accompanying sanctions for violating traders are based on regulations applied at the market for many years, in which the maximum suspension is 7 days.
Business households temporarily suspend operations due to public pressure
Notably, the business involved has temporarily suspended operations. As of the morning of July 16, the stall has not yet reopened.
According to the direct seller, the temporary suspension was due to many people calling and texting with threatening content after the information was shared on social networks and the media.

Under great public pressure, the seller has decided to temporarily stop operating. Regarding the time when it can resume operations, the Management Board has not provided specific information.
The representative of the Market Management Board stated that this incident was not only a single violation of regulations, but also directly affected the reputation and general image of Ben Thanh Market, which had been built over many years with the goal of creating trust for customers.
“This incident goes against all the efforts that we and the honest traders have built together over the years. The incident not only affects the customer experience, but also negatively impacts consumer confidence in the entire market,” the representative emphasized.
Therefore, the Management Board affirms that it will strictly and thoroughly handle the situation to prevent similar situations from recurring, and at the same time, implement deterrent measures so that other businesses will strictly comply with regulations, maintain order and the general image of the market.
