The presence of Brazilian foreign players has become the backbone of the playing strategy of many teams in the V.League. According to statistics from Transfermarkt , in the 2024/25 season, there will be a total of 353 domestic players (including overseas Vietnamese and naturalized players), playing 4,484 matches and scoring 226 goals. Meanwhile, the group of Brazilian players - with only 45 people - has 618 appearances and scored 152 goals.
The number of Brazilian players is only about 10% of the total number of players playing in the V.League, 7 times less than the domestic players, but the scoring efficiency reaches 67% compared to the total number of goals of the domestic players. This is the highest rate in 3 seasons, far exceeding the 46% and 53% marks of the previous two seasons.
According to Tri Thuc - Znews analysis, the superior scoring rate of Brazilian players does not simply come from individual factors, but is the result of a "tactical formula" clearly defined by Vietnamese teams. That formula focuses on the Brazilian attacking midfielder - striker duo, who can understand each other in terms of style, technique and football sense to create the most effective connection.
The premise for this model was born in the 2019 season when Saigon FC used Geovane Magno (attacking midfielder) to support Pedro Paulo (center forward). This pair scored a total of 20 goals and had 8 assists, the best of the season at that time.

On the contrary, the most obvious consequence of losing that formula is the case of Binh Dinh Club this season. After the duo Alan - Leo left, the team did not have enough potential to replace them and immediately fell into crisis and ended up being relegated.
Meanwhile, Nam Dinh Club with strong financial resources promptly added foreign players, after Xuan Son was injured and Hendrio was no longer suitable for the new tactical system.
The story of Brazilian foreign players in V.League is not simply a matter of personal choice but has become a tactical lesson for the entire tournament. In the context of the lack of breakthroughs in domestic player quality, the "Brazilian duo" formula will likely continue to be the main trend in the upcoming seasons.
