Ms. Chu Thanh Dien, President of the Women's Union of Co To district, said: The district attracts a large number of tourists every year, which leads to an increase in plastic waste if management is not good. Continuing to implement the project "Co To island district without plastic waste", the district actively propagates to tourists not to bring single-use plastic products and nylon bags when traveling . Women's unions at all levels identify this as a key task that needs to be carried out with high determination, and cadres and members enthusiastically respond.
In recent years, the association at all levels has coordinated with local agencies and units to organize conferences at village/area cultural houses and schools to promote waste classification at source and limit the use of plastic bags. The association established teams to go to each household to promote, guide, and sign commitments to classify waste at source and limit the use of plastic bags. The association advised the district People's Committee to allocate funds to buy plastic baskets and distribute them free of charge to households, in order to limit the use of plastic bags.
Associations at all levels coordinate to disseminate information to restaurant owners and food service establishments about the harmful effects of using plastic bags and plastic products; guide establishments to change their habits of using plastic products with environmentally friendly, easily degradable products, and how to classify waste at source.
The Women's Union of Co To town organized the "Exchange trash for gifts" Festival (March 2025), aiming to collect all kinds of scrap for recycling, contributing to building a green - clean - beautiful marine environment. Members and people enthusiastically responded by collecting plastic bottles, cans, iron and steel in carton boxes, paper bags, sacks..., to exchange gifts to receive lovely shopping baskets made from environmentally friendly recycled PP plastic. The festival collected 135kg of all kinds of recycled scrap, exchanging 320 baskets. The shopping baskets have limited the use of plastic bags in daily life, building a green living environment, towards a future without plastic waste.
Currently, the Women's Union of Co To town maintains the self-management model of "Waste classification at households" at the Women's Union of Zone 2 with 32 participating households. Each household is equipped with 2 waste classification bins (the union provides 50% of the funding, the household contributes 50%). Ms. Luong Thi Huyen, Head of the Women's Union of Zone 2, said: "Since implementing the model, households have formed the habit of classifying waste right at home, dumping waste on time, in the right place".
The Women's Union of the town directed its branches to maintain the "Organic compost pit" models in Zone 1 and Zone 4, by utilizing organic waste in daily life produced through the fermentation process to reuse it as fertilizer for plants. The Union implemented the "Green Co To" project made from used plastic bottles attached to the passenger ship port. The project has great significance in reusing plastic waste, while at the same time promoting tourists and residents to raise their sense of responsibility in protecting the environment, saying no to plastic waste.
From practical ways, each member and resident of the district has changed their habits, gradually saying no to disposable plastic products, replacing them with environmentally friendly products. From there, spreading positive messages to the community, contributing to sustainable environmental protection.
