What happened in the meeting between the North Korean leader and a senior Russian security official?

On September 14, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on the meeting, saying that the two sides discussed the topic of strengthening bilateral strategic dialogue.

Chairman Kim Jong-un and Mr Shoigu, who is also a former Russian defence minister, had an “in-depth exchange of views on the regional and international situation” and reached satisfactory consensus on issues including “further cooperation to safeguard common security interests”.

KCNA quoted the North Korean leader as affirming that the country will continue to expand cooperation with Russia within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu visited the capital Pyongyang to continue strategic dialogue between the two countries. Mr. Shoigu was personally received at the airport by Chairman Kim Jong-un.

"As part of the strategic dialogue between the two countries, a substantive exchange of views took place with our North Korean colleagues on a wide range of issues on the bilateral and international agenda," the RIA news agency quoted the Russian Security Council as saying.

According to RIA , the meeting took place in a "particularly friendly and trusting atmosphere", making an important contribution to the implementation of the agreements reached between President Putin and Chairman Kim Jong-un at the summit three months ago.

Mr. Shoigu's visit comes at a crucial moment in Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, in which the United States accuses North Korea of supplying ammunition and ballistic missiles to Russia in exchange for economic and military aid from Moscow.

Although Russia and North Korea have denied the allegations, the two countries pledged to strengthen military cooperation and signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement at a bilateral summit in June.
