Chelsea fans forced to queue due to ticketing system malfunction |
The derby match with Crystal Palace in the first round of the Premier League on the evening of August 17 was expected to be the official debut of the "Maresca version of Chelsea", but a ticket problem almost caused fans to miss the opportunity to witness their favorite team.
Videos have gone viral, showing long lines of fans stuck outside the stadium as the match was about to start at 2pm (8pm Vietnam time). The incident immediately sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with many blaming the club for the sloppy implementation of the e-ticketing system.
One angry fan wrote: “Only Chelsea would introduce a new ticketing system and then screw it up on day one. Anyone still have season tickets in the app? Chelsea ticketing is atrocious! We knew this would happen.”
Another agreed: “Chelsea’s e-ticketing system has just crashed on first use! Only away fans can get in now. The queues outside are horrendous for a home game. Maybe the kick-off should be delayed.”
Another fan analyzed: “Using friendly matches to test the e-ticket system was never going to work, because a lot of members or season ticket holders never went to those matches. Hopefully things will be fixed soon, I think.”
The problem is understood to have stemmed from the e-ticketing system Chelsea introduced earlier this year, which has replaced paper tickets and physical cards for home games at Stamford Bridge. When it was announced, the club said that fans who cannot use their phones to get tickets could apply for exemptions, with each case being considered on a case-by-case basis.
Although the system has been trialled in friendlies, the Premier League opener against Palace will be the first time it has been used in a major match.
