On June 19, Viet Duc Hospital shared information about a child who had an accident and had his entire scalp ripped off and has miraculously recovered.

According to information from the hospital, in December 2020, Viet Duc Hospital received an 8-year-old girl in Hai Phong . When her family took her out on a tricycle, the girl was lying on the back of the tricycle and her hair got caught in the wheel. Because her hair was very long and thick, when she panicked, she sat up and her entire scalp was peeled off.

At the time of the accident, the family saw the child’s scalp peeled off from the ear, around the forehead, to the other side of the head and then to the back of the neck, exposing the skull. The girl was taken to Viet Tiep Hospital (Hai Phong) for emergency treatment, then transferred to Viet Duc Hospital.

Dr. Bui Mai Anh - Department of Maxillofacial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics, Viet Duc Hospital - said that scalp grafting surgery in children is difficult because the blood vessels are small, only about 0.6 - 0.7mm, the risk of post-splicing thrombosis is quite high, requiring techniques as well as surgical equipment.

Doctors used a microscope to connect 1 artery and 2 veins, the transplant was successful. After just over 10 days of surgery, hair grew back in the grafted scalp area.

After the successful scalp transplant at Viet Duc Hospital, the family always took the baby for follow-up visits on time so that the doctor could closely monitor the recovery process.

"Thanks to that, after nearly 4 years, she has had good treatment results, her hair has grown long and beautiful. Looking at the results she has achieved today, no one can imagine that just a few years ago she had such a serious accident.

Currently, the incision at the severed site after reattachment is healing well, not raised, not painful or itchy, so no special care is needed. The girl has kept her hair long and has not cut it since her scalp was reattached," Dr. Mai Anh shared.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha - Head of the Department of Maxillofacial and Cosmetic Surgery, Viet Duc Hospital - said that the department has performed many complicated scalp reattachment cases, including multiple trauma cases with rare cases of severed scalps in children due to their common occurrence in work accidents.
