'Never before has the Vietnam-UNESCO cooperation relationship been as good as it is today'

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay acknowledged that Vietnam is one of the most active members at UNESCO and affirmed that "the Vietnam-UNESCO cooperation relationship has never been as good as it is today."

On the afternoon of June 27, at the Party Central Committee Headquarters, General Secretary To Lam had a meeting with Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director General of the United NationsEducational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) within the framework of her official visit to Vietnam.

In a friendly atmosphere, General Secretary To Lam expressed his pleasure to welcome Ms. Audrey Azoulay, General Director, back to visit Vietnam after her first official visit in September 2022.

The General Secretary also expressed his impression of the warm reception and the substantive and effective exchanges with the Director-General during his visit to UNESCO Headquarters in October 2024, creating a new impetus to promote the Vietnam-UNESCO partnership to new heights.

Over the past 80 years, UNESCO has increasingly affirmed its role and position as the "Intellectual Home of Humanity," "Building Peace in the Mind of Man" in global structure and governance, promoting multilateralism, maintaining peace, security and sustainable development in the world, especially in the context of an increasingly complex and volatile world situation.

The General Secretary congratulated and appreciated the leadership role of Ms. Audrey Azoulay during the past two terms, which has helped UNESCO's position in the international arena to grow, becoming a partner of important mechanisms such as G7, G20, Future Summit... Vietnam welcomes and supports UNESCO's vision, Medium-term Strategy for the period 2022-2029, UNESCO's Transformation Strategy and UNESCO's initiatives and priority cooperation programs, especially in new areas such as artificial intelligence.

The General Secretary expressed his appreciation for the valuable support and contributions of UNESCO, as well as Ms. Audrey Azoulay herself, in supporting Vietnam over the past time. With 72 titles recognized by UNESCO, located in all provinces and cities of Vietnam, it is a significant resource for sustainable socio-economic development, improving people's livelihoods, preserving and promoting the cultural values ​​and heritage of Vietnam, contributing to human civilization.

Sharing with the Director General of UNESCO, General Secretary To Lam emphasized that Vietnam is entering a new era, realizing the goal of becoming a developed, high-income country by 2045.

Vietnam will continue to deeply integrate into world politics, the global economy, and human civilization, constantly striving to contribute to maintaining peace, stability, and development in the region and the world.

The General Secretary affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to multilateral cooperation and the role of UNESCO, commits to promoting its role as an active and responsible member, proactively contributing to UNESCO's efforts as a member of key management mechanisms, and actively and responsibly contributing to UNESCO's mission and common work.

The General Secretary also requested UNESCO to continue to support and assist Vietnam in the process of integration and development, especially in the fields of education, science, culture and communication; provide policy advice, share experiences, and support resources for socio-economic development; coordinate and support the dissemination of humanistic values ​​and cultural values ​​in line with the interests of UNESCO and Vietnam, promote cultural values, heritage, and the strength of the Vietnamese people, etc.

The General Secretary emphasized his wish that UNESCO will always be a companion and reliable partner of Vietnam, especially in preserving and promoting the value of heritages and UNESCO titles in Vietnam for sustainable development; requested UNESCO to continue supporting the implementation of the Dossier to preserve and promote the value of the World Heritage of Thang Long Imperial Citadel - the sacred heritage of the nation; the Dossier of the Complex of Monuments and Landscapes of Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son, Kiep Bac to soon be recognized as a World Cultural Heritage in July 2025, as well as other dossiers to be considered in 2025 such as: Dong Ho Folk Painting Art recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Protection, Ho Chi Minh City in the Global Creative Cities Network, Hanoi City in the Global Learning Cities Network, etc.

For her part, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay expressed her joy and gratitude at meeting General Secretary To Lam again in Vietnam and highlighted the cooperation with Vietnam over the past nearly 50 years, recognizing Vietnam as one of the most active members at UNESCO and affirming that "the Vietnam-UNESCO cooperation relationship has never been as good as it is today."

Ms. Audrey Azoulay thanked Vietnam for its strong support and commitment and hoped that Vietnam would continue to contribute more to UNESCO's activities in particular and to the common work of humanity. The fact that Vietnam is holding a position in key mechanisms of UNESCO has demonstrated the trust of UNESCO and member states in Vietnam's contributions to the common activities of the Organization.

The UNESCO Director-General expressed his impression of Vietnam's recent socio-economic development achievements and said that Vietnam is a model that many other countries can learn from.

Ms. Audrey Azoulay highly appreciated the vision and wise leadership of the Party and State through major strategies and policies that Vietnam has recently implemented in conjunction with institutional reform, promoting education, culture, science and technology, innovation and digital transformation, creating key driving forces for the country's development, typically the policy of exempting tuition fees for all students at public schools from 2025, the development of strategies and action programs on promoting digital transformation and the application of artificial intelligence in Vietnam and the policy of promoting the private economy, including creating conditions for the private sector to participate in UNESCO activities in Vietnam.

Ms. Audrey Azoulay emphasized that UNESCO's recognition of Vietnam's titles and heritages, most recently Lang Son Global Geopark and a number of global learning cities and creative cities, has demonstrated the international community's appreciation of Vietnam's national cultural values, and is also very consistent with Vietnam's development trend in the coming time. This also demonstrates respect for Vietnam's efforts and commitments in contributing to enriching the treasure of human civilization and contributing to the common efforts of the international community.

Recognizing Vietnam's outstanding role in the field of preserving and promoting heritage values, the UNESCO Director-General affirmed that the delicate preservation of cultural, historical and traditional values ​​during the modernization process has created the unique identity and sustainable appeal of Vietnam in the international arena and that UNESCO will continue to support and assist Vietnam in activities of registering and sustainably preserving world heritages, promoting heritage values, and developing cultural industries in the coming time./.
