Barcelona were stunned when Nico Williams refused to join the team. |
In a post on his personal page early on July 7, Miguel Angel Galan, president of the Spanish Association of Coach Education (CENAFE), sparked controversy when he accused Tebas of interference in the Nico Williams deal.
“Javier Tebas, as president of La Liga, made public statements that FC Barcelona could not register Nico Williams,” Galan wrote. “He also held private meetings with Athletic Club, revealing confidential information. In this context, Williams' agent and the player, influenced by Tebas' words, asked Barcelona to include in the contract a clause allowing the player to leave if he was not registered.”
This request, according to Galan, was flatly rejected by Barcelona's board, who considered the clause an unnecessary risk that could cost the club €60 million - Williams' release clause.
Galan stressed that it was this impossible demand that caused the deal to collapse, despite everything being almost done. "Williams' agent and the player, intimidated by Tebas' words, were scared and had no choice but to sign a new contract with Athletic Club," Galán stressed.
He also revealed that Felix Tainta, Williams' agent, not only asked for a release clause but also set a July deadline for Barcelona to complete the player's registration.
According to El Pais , Tainta sabotaged the deal with unreasonable demands. Spanish media questioned whether this "super agent" acted for the benefit of Athletic Club, where Tainta players had relationships representing many other.
