238 kg bear hides in house after Los Angeles wildfire

(CLO) The Eaton Fire in Los Angeles not only forced residents to evacuate, but also affected wildlife. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife removed a large bear from a home in Altadena.

Last week, when utility workers arrived to restore power to a resident, they found a 525-pound (238-kilogram) bear under the home, forcing them to tell the homeowner that the power could not be turned back on because the bear was occupying the area they needed to work.

According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), relocating the bear took a team of about eight people and nearly 24 hours to complete.

“When a bear takes refuge in a confined space, CDFW recommends that homeowners contact the Department to have a wildlife specialist assess the situation and find a way to prevent the bear from returning, and seal the entrance once the animal is out,” CDFW said in a social media post.

CDFW experts set a bear trap near the exit, and within minutes the bear automatically entered and triggered the trap door.

The bear was then transported in a trap to the Angeles National Forest, where it was health checked, fitted with a GPS collar and measured before being safely released just after midnight.

CDFW confirmed that power has been restored to the homeowner, the crawl space has been safely boarded up, and there is no longer a threat of bear entry.

“In areas near wooded areas where bears are present, it is important to seal off confined spaces with bear-proof material before winter to prevent them from burrowing and damaging property,” CDFW stressed.
