Som Rong Pagoda, also known as Botum Vong Sa Som Rong, is located on Ton Duc Thang Street, Soc Trang Ward, Can Tho City.
Since its construction in 1785 with simple wooden and thatched architecture, over two centuries and many restorations, the pagoda has become a spacious and solemn architectural complex.
The largest reclining Buddha statue in Vietnam at Som Rong Pagoda, can be seen from afar
Entering the 5-hectare campus, visitors immediately feel the shade of ancient star trees. The first thing that attracts the eye is the 25-meter-high stupa, built about 15 years ago on an area of 100 square meters, located right at the entrance.
Next to it is a sala building of over 1,000 m² with a two-storey design that represents a subtle combination of traditional Khmer architecture and modern style.
The building's unique color scheme not only creates eye-catching beauty but also shows respect for spiritual culture.
Inside the sala, the statue of Buddha Shakyamuni standing on nine dragons is a sacred symbol, expressing the profound meaning of Buddha's salvation of all living beings.
The stupa is located right at the entrance, attracting all eyes.
However, the highlight that makes Som Rong Pagoda famous is the statue of Buddha Shakyamuni entering nirvana. With a length of 63 m, a height of 22.5 m and a weight of 490 tons, the statue is placed on a pedestal 28 meters above the ground, enhancing its majestic and solemn appearance.
Som Rong Pagoda's architecture bears the strong Khmer cultural identity.
The two main colors of white and light blue not only create a graceful beauty but also express peace and tranquility. According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City, this is officially the largest reclining Buddha statue in the country.
Many tourists in Khmer costumes take souvenir photos at the temple
Som Rong Pagoda is a spiritual tourist destination that attracts many visitors to Can Tho City.
Ms. Le Thi Bao Duyen, a tourist from Vinh Long province, shared: "I have visited many pagodas, but Som Rong Pagoda really left a deep impression on me. The traditional Khmer architecture combines with modernity very harmoniously, especially the beautiful and majestic reclining Buddha statue."
