In the coastal area of Diem Dien, Thai Thuy and Dong Thuy Anh communes, many orphans and poor families were at risk of dropping out of school. With their kind hearts, officers and soldiers of the Diem Dien Port Border Guard Station opened their arms, sponsored and raised them, helping them have the conditions to continue going to school.
Like many children in coastal areas, Nguyen Thao Nhi in Thuong Phuc village, Dong Thuy Anh commune, is small, has tanned skin, and is shy when interacting with strangers. Nhi is in 6th grade this year at Thuy Truong Secondary School. Her circumstances are pitiful. Her father passed away when she was only a few months old, and her mother remarried. Her paternal grandparents' family is poor, so she had to live with her maternal grandmother. Her maternal grandmother's family is not much better, her grandfather passed away early, and now she is the only one raising two children and Nhi to study. Mrs. Vu Thi Vui (Nhi's maternal grandmother) shared: The family's life depends on a few fields of rice and working for hire, so it is also difficult. Fortunately, my children and grandchildren are all obedient and eager to learn, so I try to work hard and take care of them.
The family is very grateful to the officers and soldiers of the Border Guard Station who sponsored and supported Nhi's education. The soldiers not only helped her go to school but also gave Nhi love and affection, helping her to be confident, integrate, and have more motivation to succeed in life.
Nguyen Thao Nhi is just one of 13 children in the coastal border area that the Diem Dien Port Border Guard Station has helped through the program "Helping children go to school" and the model "Adopted children of the Border Guard Station" in the past 9 years. Most of them are in difficult circumstances, having lost their father, mother or both parents since childhood. They are not only lacking in love but also economically poor, so they are on the verge of having to drop out of school if they do not receive attention from the community and local authorities, especially without the active and timely help of the Border Guard. Lieutenant Colonel Vu Dang Khan, a local officer of the Diem Dien Port Border Guard Station, said: In this coastal area, there are many students in difficult circumstances, including 13 especially disadvantaged children that the unit has sponsored. A typical example is Ta Thi Bich Hang in Tam Dong village, Thai Thuy commune, who lost both her parents at an early age and is being taken care of by her uncle. In addition to helping with food and school supplies, officers and soldiers from the Border Guard Station also regularly visit, instruct and encourage her, so she is good and matures early. She has just finished 9th grade and passed the entrance exam to 10th grade at Dong Thuy Anh High School. During the summer break, she has learned to work part-time to earn money to pay for her studies and share the financial burden on her uncle's family.
It can be said that the officers and soldiers of the Diem Dien Port Border Guard Station have accompanied and helped many students with especially difficult circumstances to achieve their dreams of going to school, nurturing their faith and hope for the future. For the program "Helping children go to school", the children are supported with 4.5 million VND/child/year, along with books and school supplies. Notably, some children have made efforts to become students at Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy, while many others continue to go to school and persistently pursue their dreams. With the model "Adopted children of the Border Guard Station", in addition to the budget of 7 million VND/child/year, every month the officers and soldiers also build a 20kg "charity rice jar", both providing for their lives and motivating them to study. Lieutenant Colonel Do Truong Giang, Political Commissar of the Diem Dien Port Border Guard Station, said: Up to now, the total value of support for poor students to go to school from the Station's Border Guard officers and soldiers voluntarily contributed more than 100 million VND. That humanitarian activity has spread to the community, we have received the cooperation and support of local organizations and individuals of more than 160 million VND to support the children to have better learning and living conditions.
We arrived at the Border Guard Station of Diem Dien Port on the occasion when the unit was preparing to organize a meeting with poor students to give them gifts to encourage them to start the new school year. The image of the soldiers in green uniforms is beautiful and radiant in the hearts of the people in the coastal border area, because they not only bring a peaceful life but also imbued with military-civilian affection, but also a solid support for children in difficult circumstances to continue going to school.
