Update new locations for each subject

GD&TĐ - After operating two-level local government, the names of many localities have changed. Many educational contents are directly affected by this change.

Many subjects are affected

In the History and Geography textbook for grade 5, the book series Connecting knowledge with life, right in the first lesson, in the content of territory and administrative units, the content "Vietnam has 63 provinces and centrally-run cities" is still displayed. After the merger, this content is no longer suitable for reality.

In the History and Geography subject of grade 4, students learn topics about local geographical locations on the map of Vietnam, describe some main features of local nature, and present economic activities. Along with that are topics about the midlands and mountainous regions of the North, the Northern Delta, the Central Coast, the Central Highlands, and the South.

When arranging administrative units, the old socio-economic regions will no longer exist. Specifically, there will no longer be a coastal region in the Central region or the Central Highlands, but there will be provinces with both mountains and sea in the South Central region.

Similar to the content of the subjects in the History and Geography textbooks for grade 9; Geography textbooks for grade 12. For the History program for grade 10, Economics and Law Education for grade 10, the names of old provinces such as Quang Nam, Kon Tum, Tra Vinh appear frequently in the lessons.

The biggest impact is on local education content. All provinces and cities have changed their boundaries, changed the names of communes and wards, abolished the district level... leading to inappropriate content compiled in previous years. For example, Hai Phong has lychee, green bean cake, Mao Dien Temple of Literature; Hung Yen has longan, fish cake...

Although Hanoi is not a locality subject to the reorganization, the names of many areas will change. Familiar district names such as Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da... will no longer exist and will be replaced by new ward names. Getting used to new place names is a big challenge in the teaching process of teachers and schools.

Ms. Truong Thi Hien - teacher at Quang Trung Primary School (Cua Nam, Hanoi) shared: Previously, teachers in the school were very familiar with the name Hoan Kiem district. In their lectures, teachers and students always mentioned this name with sacred feelings. Now the school is located in Cua Nam ward. To get used to this name, it takes more time and effort from teachers to help students get used to the new place names.

Help students access new knowledge early

While waiting for official guidance, many educational institutions have proactively adjusted teaching materials, lessons, and topics to ensure they are appropriate to the local situation. From the actual implementation at the grassroots level, many schools have been proactive and flexible to ensure timely adaptation of teaching.

Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Ha - Principal of Dai Kim Secondary School (Dinh Cong, Hanoi), said: Updating local information and data in History and Geography subjects is a mandatory requirement, requiring teachers to quickly adjust teaching content to suit reality.

To ensure that the teaching and learning of History and Geography subjects for grade 9 is not interrupted, the school has organized training and seminars so that teachers can promptly grasp new administrative information, related documents and changes in the local economy, society and culture. At the same time, the content of lectures, reference materials, maps and diagrams are reviewed and adjusted to ensure accuracy and appropriateness.

During the teaching process, teachers are encouraged to innovate their methods, increase the application of images, documentary videos... to help students learn visually and vividly. Testing and evaluation are also adjusted to promote thinking ability and focus on students' ability to apply knowledge into practice and their skills of analysis, comparison and evaluation.

Meanwhile, Ms. Vu Thi Anh - History teacher, An Thi High School (An Thi, Hung Yen), said: Editing and supplementing documents is necessary to ensure accuracy, updating and suitability to reality.

According to Ms. Anh, teachers need to proactively expand and integrate more related knowledge. For example, previously, the local education content of Hung Yen province did not mention the sea element, but now, after merging with the coastal province of Thai Binh, it is necessary to add more information about appropriate geography and culture.

While waiting for specific guidance documents, school teachers proactively research and exploit documents from reliable sources to adjust and update lecture content. This not only demonstrates a sense of responsibility, but also helps students access knowledge in a complete, accurate and close to local practice.

Ms. Luong Thi Hong Hanh - Vice Principal of De Xu Phinh Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (Pung Luong, Lao Cai), said: Previously, the school was located in De Xu Phinh commune, Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province - a name that was familiar not only to local people but also to the whole country. The name change will certainly make many students unfamiliar at first.

Therefore, the school has asked teachers to proactively research and adjust the content of the lesson plan to ensure it is suitable for the actual situation. Next August, the school will develop a teaching plan for subjects and educational activities, helping teachers promptly update and implement in the new school year.

The Ministry of Education and Training said it is urgently completing a review and assessment of the implementation of the 2018 General Education Program to update and adjust a number of subjects to ensure that the program is implemented in accordance with reality.

In particular, subjects affected by administrative boundary adjustments will be guided to publishers, organizations, and individuals with approved textbooks to make necessary adjustments to update new administrative information in the direction of ensuring the stability of textbooks and effectiveness in teaching and learning implementation.
