How to reduce sore throat after drinking alcohol

VnExpressVnExpress08/02/2024

Drink plenty of water, gargle with salt water, and drink warm tea to help reduce symptoms of sore throat and hoarseness after drinking alcohol.

Dr. Ho Van Huu, ENT Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that dry throat, sore throat, and hoarseness often occur after drinking alcohol due to many reasons such as dehydration. Drinking alcohol beyond the body's limit leads to thirst, reduces immune system function, and makes it susceptible to infections such as flu, fatigue, headaches, and sore throat.

This drink also affects the stomach lining, reducing stomach acid, leading to esophageal reflux. At this time, acid goes up to the throat and larynx, causing heartburn, hoarseness, and dry throat.

Some people with acute sensitivity to alcohol have symptoms of skin flushing and congestion of the nasal, sinus and throat mucosa. Drinking cold beer with ice and talking loudly and a lot can easily lead to hoarseness and sore throat.

To reduce sore throat and hoarseness after drinking alcohol, especially during Tet, Dr. Huu recommends applying some of the following measures.

Drink plenty of water or drinks and foods containing sodium, potassium, and essential minerals after drinking alcohol to replenish electrolytes for the body, reduce sore throat and hoarseness.

Gargling with warm salt water after drinking alcohol or beer can help reduce inflammation, temporarily relieve pain, and soothe the throat.

Drinking warm teas such as herbal tea, ginger tea or warm lemon water with honey, which have anti-inflammatory properties, can control irritation and reduce sore throat.

Steam inhalation can be used when the throat is sore or hoarse after drinking alcohol. You should breathe in warm air to reduce irritation. You can add a little essential oil to the steam inhaler to increase the relaxing and pleasant effect.

Over-the-counter lozenges can temporarily relieve a sore throat. They often contain menthol or benzocaine, which numbs the throat and relieves pain. Lozenges also stimulate saliva production, which keeps the throat moist.

Doctor Huu recommends limiting alcohol consumption, drinking in moderation, and stopping at the right time to ensure health and safety. Limit the use of ice when drinking beer, do not shout too loudly, do not smoke, and avoid inhaling cigarette smoke. Rest and eat nutritious foods to reduce sore throat and hoarseness.
