In Man United's disappointing 1-1 draw with Fulham in round 2 of the Premier League, captain Bruno Fernandes' missed penalty became the center of discussion.
It is worth mentioning that this kick not only caused Man United to lose the opportunity to take the lead but also came with a moment of argument with the referee, causing many mixed opinions after the match.
The incident happened in the 37th minute at Craven Cottage. After referee Chris Kavanagh awarded Man United a penalty, Bruno Fernandes retreated to gain momentum. At that moment, Mr. Kavanagh suddenly collided with the Portuguese midfielder.
Bruno Fernandes' reaction was immediate and obvious. He took the ball and said something to the referee. At this point, Kavanagh seemed to be reminding other players not to enter the penalty area.
When he turned around, he raised his hand to indicate that it was an unintentional collision. Although there was no sign of serious pain, Fernandes' concentration was clearly affected.
With a frustrated face, he took the penalty kick and the ball went too high over the goal. Notably, this was the fifth time Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty kick for Man United. His last miss was against Chelsea in December 2023.
“I felt uncomfortable,” Bruno Fernandes told Sky Sports after the match.
"Everyone has their own routine before taking a penalty. But after bumping into the referee, I lost my cool a little bit. I was upset because he didn't apologize so I got agitated," he continued.
However, Bruno Fernandes added that that was not the reason he missed the penalty.
Bruno said: "I missed the shot because my contact with the ball was too bad. I put my foot down too low and the ball went over the bar." Although he took responsibility, the opening sentence of the player wearing the number 8 shirt in the interview made people wonder. It seemed that he still implicitly blamed the collision with the referee, considering it an indirect cause of psychological pressure and affecting his shot.

Coach Ruben Amorim also spoke up to defend his student, but at the same time emphasized the importance of the missed kick: "Bruno is not used to missing penalties. He understands that every moment can have a big impact on the team." The Portuguese coach also revealed that Bruno Fernandes did not play really comfortably due to "the burden of responsibility being too great".
The 1-1 result means the Red Devils continue their struggling start with two winless matches after two opening rounds of the 2025-2026 Premier League. Pressure is mounting on Ruben Amorim's team as they prepare to face Grimsby Town in the League Cup and Burnley in the Premier League.
