Brazil and Italy discuss 'common global challenge'

On June 21, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, during a lightning visit to the Italian capital.

The two sides discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and economic cooperation between Italy and Brazil. During the visit, President Lula da Silva also met with host country President Sergio Mattarella; leader of the main opposition Democratic Party Elly Schlein and Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri.

Writing on Twitter , the Brazilian president said he had spoken to his host counterpart Sergio Mattarella about strengthening bilateral relations and expanding trade between the two countries. Meanwhile, the leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, said she and the South American leader had discussed “common global challenges: democracy, climate change and inequality.”

Additionally, President Lula Da Silva and Mayor Roberto Gualtieri discussed Rome's renewed push to host the 2030 World Expo, as well as steps the city government can take to tackle climate change.

Earlier in the day, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met with Pope Francis at the Vatican. On Twitter , Lula da Silva thanked the Pope for the meeting and the “interesting conversation about world peace .”

Meanwhile, the Vatican said the 45-minute closed-door meeting between Da Silva and Pope Francis took place in a cordial and friendly atmosphere. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the good relations between Brazil and the Holy See and agreed to strengthen cooperation to promote moral values and the common good.

In addition, President Lula da Silva and the head of the Holy See also exchanged views on the “socio-political situation in the region,” discussed measures to promote peace and reduce inequality, as well as promote programs to guarantee the rights of indigenous peoples and enhance environmental protection. Lula da Silva extended an invitation to Pope Francis to visit Brazil next October.
