This playground is an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of youth training.
Experts say coach Kim Sang-sik's team has even skills but does not have a "leader" to lead the overall play.
Lack of outstanding factors
At the talk show "Let's support and cheer on the U23 Vietnam team to compete in the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship" organized by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper on July 15, commenting on the U23 Vietnam team this time, coach Phan Thanh Binh said that the professional level of the young Vietnamese players has not clearly shown their superiority compared to their opponents. "U23 Vietnam has many talented young players but has not yet shown their outstanding ability. In the context of countries in the region renewing their squads with the policy of naturalizing players, the U23 Vietnam team will face many difficulties in the race to win the championship this time" - the former striker of the Vietnamese team commented.
Once a leading striker in Vietnamese football, Coach Phan Thanh Binh highly appreciates the ability of his "juniors". He believes that U23 Vietnam strikers such as Nguyen Dinh Bac, Nguyen Quoc Viet, Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Nguyen Ngoc My need to maintain their form and "goal-scoring" instincts like in the recent domestic tournament, then the opportunity for U23 Vietnam to win the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship will be wide open.
Meanwhile, coach Doan Minh Xuong was impressed with overseas Vietnamese player Viktor Le and predicted that the midfielder currently playing for Ha Tinh Club will become a pillar of the Vietnamese team in the near future. Mr. Xuong also commented that U23 Vietnam is a well-balanced force with many potential players but there is no breakthrough factor in the playing style. Therefore, the team will face many challenges on the way back to the final match of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship.

Should players be naturalized?
Talking about the recent naturalization of players from Southeast Asian teams, Coach Phan Thanh Binh said that this helps raise the level and compete for achievements, but will cause domestic players to "lose" their talent.
"Naturalization helps Southeast Asian teams rise to the world rankings. This trend aims to compete for achievements but also causes the team to lose part of its identity, and national football loses its sustainable development path. I think that Vietnamese football should not follow this direction and needs to focus on training young players, helping to produce talented generations for the future. The development process of young players must be through regular competition in top football environments. Vietnam's top tournaments such as V-League have not created many opportunities for young players to show their talent" - Coach Phan Thanh Binh worried.
Sharing the same view, football expert Doan Minh Xuong said that naturalizing players helps raise the level of football in the region such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. However, Vietnamese football needs to have a player naturalization policy that is suitable for the culture and identity of the team.
"To develop in the long term, Vietnamese football needs to encourage clubs to invest in developing young players, proactively search for and create opportunities for overseas Vietnamese talents. It is necessary to be selective when naturalizing players, depending on the time, goals or positions in the national team that are still lacking, similar to the case of Brazilian striker Nguyen Xuan Son" - Mr. Xuong expressed.
Changing the mindset of football development
At the talk show, football expert Doan Minh Xuong said that Vietnamese football needs to change its thinking and awareness to develop national football.
Mr. Xuong analyzed: "The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced the project to develop Vietnamese football for the period 2025-2035 and vision to 2045. This is an opportunity for football leaders to change their mindset, not to compete for immediate achievements but ignore fundamental factors, to build a long-term development strategy, invest synchronously, continuously and have a suitable roadmap...".
In the world's football powers, strong clubs will create motivation to help the national team develop and achieve success. Therefore, in addition to upgrading modern facilities, clubs need to have a solid foundation and take advantage of good human resources to develop sustainably and achieve high results.
"To realize the goals of reaching the final qualifying round of the 2030 World Cup and the final round of the 2034 World Cup according to the football development project, the current Vietnam U23 team needs more in-depth investment. This generation of players will take on the tasks of the national team in the future, so they must show development and progress in upcoming tournaments such as the U23 Southeast Asia, the U23 Asian qualifiers or the 33rd SEA Games" - expert Doan Minh Xuong commented.
"The V-League competition regulations need to require increasing the number of playing slots for young players aged U20 and U23. It is necessary to create opportunities for young players to play in the V-League so that we can search for and select talents for the national (A) team" - Mr. Doan Minh Xuong proposed.
Currently, not many young players have the opportunity to compete and gain experience in the V-League when many teams are racing for achievements, taking advantage of foreign players and veteran pillars, especially in important positions such as strikers.
