Germany is one of the powerhouses of volleyball. Therefore, it is understandable that the Thai women's team lost when facing this European giant. However, losing 9/10 matches in the 2025 VNL season has pushed the Thai women's volleyball team into a dangerous situation.
This defeat took place in the 10th round of the group stage. Thailand could only hold out against Germany in the first game with a regrettable score of 24-26. Then they quickly lost 19-25, 11-25.
The day before, the Thai women's volleyball team lost to the US 1-3 (26-28, 25-21, 25-27, 15-25). After two consecutive losses, Thailand dropped to near the bottom of the rankings. And they only have two rounds left to compete to escape the bottom position.
This season, the team that finishes last in the table will be disqualified from next year’s tournament. Currently, that position belongs to Korea - a team that also has a record of 1 win, 9 losses after 10 rounds.
Thailand is currently ranked above South Korea thanks to a better goal difference. The next two rounds will decide the fate of these two Asian women's volleyball teams.
Accordingly, Thailand will have to face the Dominican Republic and Canada - two volleyball powerhouses. Meanwhile, Korea will face Bulgaria and France. Although not highly rated, these two teams have good form in this year's tournament.
This is almost Thailand's worst season since joining VNL in 2018. The Thai girls only won against France (3-1), made an impression against Japan (lost 2-3), and had almost no other worth-watching performances in the tournament.
According to the new format of VNL 2025, the tournament will be expanded from 16 to 18 teams, and the team at the bottom of the table will be eliminated from the tournament next year (no team is relegated in previous years). This year's tournament race is therefore extremely fierce.
