Collection of more than 1,000 antique teapots of a man in Binh Duong

(Dan Tri) – After more than 10 years of collecting antique teapots, Mr. Nguyen Van Duong (40 years old, Thuan An City, Binh Duong Province) has owned more than 1,000 teapots with different designs and periods.

Mr. Duong's collection includes all kinds of teapots made of ceramic, porcelain, and porcelain, dating from the 6th century to the present.

“My criteria is to prioritize Vietnamese and ancient ceramics, about 30 years old or older,” said Mr. Duong.

On the shelves in Mr. Duong's house, hundreds of teapots and vases of all colors, shapes and sizes are displayed.

Mr. Duong said that at first he just wanted to find familiar teapots from his childhood. The more he collected, the more fascinated he became by their beauty and stories.

In the early days, Mr. Duong wandered through antique and second-hand stalls in Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, etc. to find teapots. After that, he searched for old and antique teapots on forums specializing in buying and selling antiques.

A corner of the yard where Mr. Duong displays hundreds of large and small teapots of many different types of ceramics. This is also a space for Mr. Duong to enjoy tea with his family on weekends.

Most of Mr. Duong’s teapots are made of ceramic. Some are made of porcelain from the Van Ninh, Nam Phong, and Saigon ceramic lines. All of these artifacts have simple shapes, prints, and patterns that are close to the lives of Vietnamese people.

“Antique teapots are available in many places from the South to the North. I often buy them online so I am worried that they will break during transportation,” said Mr. Duong.

The vases and teapots displayed on the wooden shelves come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colours, the surface of the teapots clearly showing the marks of time. Some of the vases have simple decorative motifs and patterns.

“The way these vases and teapots are displayed creates an ancient and historical space, reflecting the richness and diversity of traditional ceramic art,” said Mr. Duong.

The teapots originated from Saigon, Lai Thieu in the years 1940 - 1960.

The teapot has the shape of a fish with the main color green and yellow decorative details. The fish scales and eyes are meticulously depicted, highlighting the unique beauty of Bien Hoa ceramic products.

Southern teapots were produced from the 1970s to the 1990s, with shapes of animals such as chickens, birds, storks, etc.

Bat Trang teapots were produced from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Chau O ceramic teapot – Quang Ngai from the 19th-20th century with custard apple shape, glossy brown enamel surface. On the lid of the teapot are decorative details in the shape of tree branches, adding a highlight to the design.

Many visitors were moved when they saw the teapots that their families had owned and used during their childhood. Many people asked to buy them, but Mr. Duong did not sell them. Mr. Duong considered his collection to be priceless treasures and will continue to enjoy collecting teapots in the future.
