De Gea almost became a Real Madrid player in 2015. |
"I will explain everything when my career is over," De Gea told Cronache Di Spogliatoio . "When something doesn't happen, there is definitely a reason behind it."
In the summer of 2015, De Gea was close to joining Real Madrid on the last day of the transfer window. However, the deal collapsed at the last minute because the documents were not submitted on time. Both sides accused the other of causing the contract to fall through. But for De Gea, that outcome did not leave him with any regrets.
"The transfer was very close, but it didn't happen. For me, it turned out well because Manchester is home," the Spanish goalkeeper affirmed.
De Gea joined MU from Atletico Madrid in 2011, becoming an icon in the "Red Devils" goal for more than a decade. He won the Premier League title in the 2012/13 season, along with the FA Cup (2016), Europa League (2017), and two Carabao Cups (2017, 2023).
After leaving Old Trafford in the summer of 2023, De Gea took a year off before returning to Fiorentina as a free agent. He revealed that this break brought a lot of value: "It was one of the best years of my life. I felt tired both physically and mentally, and it was time to stop, recover and come back stronger."
Despite receiving invitations from many clubs in England, De Gea admitted: "In my heart, I cannot wear the shirt of any other English club other than Manchester United."
In the 2024/25 season, the 34-year-old goalkeeper played consistently, keeping 11 clean sheets in 42 appearances and has just extended his contract with Fiorentina until June 2028.
