VTC NewsVTC News11/04/2024

A 68-year-old woman from Hanoi was repeatedly bitten by a dog on her face, arms, legs, and especially her face. Her family took her to a nearby medical facility for first aid, and then she was transferred to a hospital for surgery.

Doctor Vu Giang An, Department of Orthopedics, Neurology and Spine, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that the patient was admitted to the hospital with a dog bite on the face, the wounds were all open, bleeding profusely. The mouth area had a torn lower lip that extended into the oral cavity. Above the eye area, there was a wound on the lower eyelid of the left eye that tore down to the nostril, exposing the bone. Because the wound was so large, the doctor had to stitch nearly 70 stitches.

“These wounds are at high risk of infection, so during the procedure, the doctor must be very careful and meticulous in cutting, cleaning and avoiding infection. After surgery, the patient is now stable and has been instructed to receive tetanus shots, rabies shots and anti-rabies serum,” said Dr. An.

According to Dr. Tran Quang Dai, Vaccination Consulting Department, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, because the wound is on the face, in addition to tetanus vaccination, the patient needs to be fully vaccinated against rabies, including both vaccine and anti-rabies serum.

Currently, the Vaccination Consultation Room, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases has received many cases of rabies vaccination due to dog, cat and wild animal bites.

On the morning of April 9, 2024 alone, at Kim Chung facility, 20 people came to get rabies vaccination and 5 cases received anti-rabies serum injection.

To avoid unfortunate incidents, doctors recommend that when bitten by a dog, people should go to a medical facility for first aid, cleaning, disinfecting the wound, and advice on rabies vaccination.

Get rabies vaccination as soon as possible. If people are bitten by dogs in areas such as the head, face, neck, genitals, hands, feet or other multiple injuries with large, deep wounds, they must get rabies vaccination immediately, with full rabies vaccine and anti-rabies serum.

The hot summer is the time when infectious diseases can break out, especially rabies. Therefore, people should not be subjective, households with dogs should have their dogs fully vaccinated. If dogs go outside, they should be muzzled to prevent disease in the community.
