(NLDO)- Not only proactively responding to epidemics, Vietnam Field Hospital supports the community and other units in the fight against cholera.

According to the Vietnamese peacekeeping force at the UNMISS Mission (Republic of South Sudan), in early December 2024, a cholera outbreak broke out in Bentiu, South Sudan, posing a major challenge to the health care work in the region. In this situation, Vietnam Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 (LDH 2.6) quickly deployed a series of measures to protect the health of United Nations (UN) staff and local communities.

As soon as information about the cholera outbreak was received, Field Hospital 2.6 established an Epidemic Prevention Steering Committee to develop a timely response plan. Procedures for receiving and handling cholera patients were developed in detail, from initial screening, disease classification to isolation and treatment according to United Nations guidelines.

The hospital pays special attention to minimizing the risk of internal infection, ensuring the safety of both medical staff and patients. Training courses to raise awareness and skills on cholera have been organized, providing full information to the staff.

Field Hospital 2.6 has prepared a large amount of necessary medicines and medical supplies such as rehydration and electrolyte solutions, antibiotics, antiseptic solutions and protective clothing. Hand hygiene systems with quick antiseptic solutions are installed in high-risk areas such as the entrance gate, hospital lobby, dining area and staff housing.

Along with that, the hospital disinfects the entire campus with chemicals containing chloramine B, ensuring the environment is always clean. Water filtration systems are checked and maintained, and water is regularly tested to ensure a safe water source for daily life and food processing.

As the most highly specialized medical facility in the sub-region, Field Hospital 2.6 not only ensures epidemic prevention at the hospital but also supports other units. The hospital advises the sub-region commander on epidemic prevention plans, guides level 1 hospitals to set up standard isolation areas, and sends highly specialized staff to organize training courses.

This knowledge and skills have helped medical staff at level 1 hospitals to effectively prevent, diagnose and treat cholera, contributing to reducing pressure on Level 2 Field Hospital.

The hospital sent highly specialized staff to organize training courses on cholera prevention.

Thanks to the efforts and close coordination, to date, Field Hospital 2.6 has not recorded any cases of cholera among its staff or other units. Strict control measures are proving effective, ensuring a safe environment for medical activities.

In the coming time, the hospital will continue to closely monitor the epidemic situation, strengthen propaganda, conduct regular inspections and maintain preventive measures. The tireless efforts of Field Hospital 2.6 not only help control the epidemic but also affirm the responsibility and high expertise of the Vietnamese military medical force in the international peacekeeping mission.
