Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko says ready to hold Ukraine peace conference

"There is no need to be angry with Mr Zelensky no matter what you think of him. It is important to deal with Mr Zelensky because the majority of Ukrainian society supports him. So it is important to negotiate," Mr Lukashenko said.

The Belarusian leader invited President Zelensky to come to Belarus for dialogue because "Kyiv is only 200 km from the Belarusian border and takes half an hour by plane".

"Come here! We will sit here and reach an agreement in a calm atmosphere, without trouble. So please tell Mr. Trump that I am waiting for him to come here to talk with Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelensky. We will negotiate calmly if they want to reach an agreement," the Belarusian president continued.

Mr Lukashenko is a close ally of President Putin and Belarus is under sanctions from the US and other Western countries for supporting Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.

In the interview, Mr Lukashenko praised Mr Trump's efforts to talk to Russia and end the war in Ukraine. "Trump is a good man, he talks about it a lot and has done something to end the war in Ukraine and in the Middle East. It seems that his only policy is to end the war. That is a great idea," President Lukashenko said.

The interview was recorded on February 27 but was released after Mr. Trump said he had received a message from Mr. Zelensky saying he was ready for a long-term peace dialogue with Russia.

The meeting between Mr Zelensky and Mr Trump at the White House last week was tense and controversial, and Mr Trump was later reported to have ordered a halt to all military aid to Ukraine. President Zelensky later said he regretted the incident and wanted to fix things by talking to the US leader again.
