Today, October 2, at Giang Vo Secondary School (Ba Dinh District, Hanoi ), the Hanoi Department of Education and Training launched the Lifelong Learning Response Week 2024. The week takes place from now until October 7 with the theme "Developing a reading culture to promote lifelong learning".

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, emphasized the great significance and importance of reading books for the development of knowledge, skills, thinking,education and training of human personality. Mr. Cuong pointed out the fact that after 10 years, the reading habit of Vietnamese people has made little progress even though the number of books published each year is higher than the previous year.
Mr. Cuong cited a recent survey showing that in Vietnam, only 30% of people read books regularly, 26% do not read books and 44% read books occasionally. The number of books read is about 4 books/year, but of those, more than 3 are textbooks and reference books, meaning that Vietnamese people only read 1 book/year and the time spent reading books by Vietnamese people is about 1 hour/day, among the lowest in the world .
"This is a very alarming situation among young people," Mr. Cuong acknowledged. According to him, part of the reason is that young people have to spend too much time studying, so their entertainment needs, including reading, are also limited.
"On the other hand, in today's era, listening and viewing culture is somewhat overwhelming the reading culture of the community in general and young people in particular," said Mr. Cuong.
Therefore, at the ceremony, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong called on leaders at all levels, organizations and the whole society to join hands to build a stronger reading culture, promote the lifelong learning movement, contribute to improving people's knowledge, training human resources, and developing talents for the country and the capital.

Ms. Pham Thi Diem, Vice Chairwoman of Ba Dinh District People's Committee, shared many key tasks that the district will continue to promote in the coming time to develop a reading culture. Such as establishing reading clubs by topic and age, helping people read together and share their feelings; renovating school libraries and developing a reading culture in educational institutions and communities; mobilizing students and people to contribute books to build classroom bookcases for disadvantaged schools.
According to Ms. Diem, the District People's Committee will promote the application of information technology and digital transformation to improve the quality of library activities; introduce and replicate management models, organize typical and exemplary school library activities...
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Jonathan Wallace Baker, UNESCO Representative in Vietnam, affirmed: "UNESCO is ready to join hands with the Vietnamese Government and Hanoi City in the journey to make lifelong learning a reality for everyone, regardless of age, circumstances and status."
