Supachok's "embarrassing" goal honored at AFF Cup

After two days of online voting on the AFF Cup homepage, the title of best goal in the second leg of the AFF Cup final has its owner. Accordingly, striker Supachok Sarachat was the winner with 85.41% of the total 46,482 votes. Nguyen Hai Long ranked second with 12.12%. Next was Tuan Hai (2.22%) and finally Ben Davis (0.25%).

Notably, Supachok has received a lot of criticism for his controversial goal against the Vietnamese team in the second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final at Rajamangala Stadium on the evening of January 5. Instead of returning the ball to the Vietnamese team (Dinh Trieu actively threw the ball out of bounds when a Vietnamese player was injured), the Thai striker decided to shoot straight into the "Golden Dragons" goal. In terms of the rules, Supachok was not wrong. However, many Vietnamese and Southeast Asian fans disagreed with this striker. The goal went against the spirit of noble sportsmanship in football. Thailand should have returned the ball to the Vietnamese team to continue the match. Many opinions on social networks called this goal a "shameful goal". In recent days, Vietnamese fans have been shouting in support of Supachok's goal. That caused the number of votes for this striker's goal to increase dramatically. In addition to the above award, Supachok's controversial goal was also nominated for the AFF Cup's Best Goal award. The number of votes for the 1998-born star was also overwhelming with about 80% of the votes. In particular, the voters were mainly from Vietnam.

That means, Vietnamese fans are "forcing" Supachok to accept the award for the goal that lacked fair play. This is no different from the "sweet punishment" that fans want to give to the Thai striker. In that situation, Thairath newspaper wrote an article: "Supachok's situation will definitely make you heartbroken. Revealing the latest voting results for the title of the most beautiful goal of the AFF Cup 2024". The Thai newspaper emphasized that Supachok being "forced" to accept the award made this striker and fans of the Golden Temple country heartbroken. Supachok spoke up to clarify, affirming that he did not know the Vietnamese player kicked the ball out of bounds and that everything was just a misunderstanding. However, the explanation of the striker born in 1998 did not satisfy many people.
