Doctors point out common mistakes when bathing

Bathing is a familiar daily habit, seemingly simple and harmless. However, according to dermatologists, if you do not bathe properly, you may be unintentionally damaging your skin without even knowing it.

Common mistakes when bathing that few people pay attention to are the reason why the skin becomes increasingly dry, irritated and vulnerable, according to the health site Onlymyhealth (India).

Water temperature

According to Bhavuk Dhir, a dermatologist at PSRI Hospital, New Delhi (India), one of the most common mistakes when bathing is using water that is too hot combined with scrubbing the skin too hard. This can remove the natural oils on the skin's surface and disrupt the outermost protective barrier, leading to dry skin, irritation and increased sensitivity.

Research in the journal Clinical Medicine also confirms that hot water can damage the skin's protective barrier, leaving skin dehydrated and prone to redness or inflammation.

Meanwhile, cold or warm water is more gentle, helps reduce water loss and helps maintain healthy skin.

Frequency of bathing

Not only is hot water harmful, the habit of bathing too many times a day or using strong soaps is also bad for the skin.

According to Mr. Dhir, bathing frequently, especially with a lot of soap or taking long baths, can cause the skin to lose its natural protective layer, causing dryness, irritation and disrupting the beneficial microflora on the skin's surface.

Many people mistakenly think that bathing thoroughly with lots of soap will help them get cleaner, but in fact it can have the opposite effect.

If you're active and have to shower twice a day, Dhir recommends taking a quick second shower and only using soap when absolutely necessary.

Bath sponge

Additionally, dermatologists discourage the use of loofahs or other high-friction bath sponges because they can cause microscopic scratches and irritation to the skin. If not cleaned and dried properly, they can become an ideal environment for bacteria to grow.

You should also not bathe for too long, especially with hot water because it will remove the natural oils on your skin.

For people with sensitive or dry skin, using the wrong soap can make the condition worse.

Instead, choose products that are gentle, unscented, pH balanced, and contain moisturizing ingredients.
