Reuters reported that Australia said it will cooperate with Norway's Kongsberg Defense Group to produce long-range naval strike missiles (also known as anti-ship missiles - NSM) and joint strike missiles (JSM) in Newcastle city, located on Australia's east coast.

According to Australian Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy, the Australian government will contribute 850 million AUD (573.8 million USD) with Kongsberg Defence Group to establish the above production facility.

“The establishment of a manufacturing facility at Newcastle Airport will help the country become more self-reliant and stockpile more weapons for war, while supporting the local economy and the defence industry,” the Australian Department of Defence Industry said in a statement.

Mr Conroy said the anti-ship cruise missiles would be used by the Australian Defence Force and the Newcastle facility would be one of only two in the world capable of producing the NSM and JSM. The other facility is in the Norwegian town of Kongsberg.

Australia previously announced it would build a guided weapons manufacturing facility as part of a defence overhaul aimed at boosting the long-range precision strike capabilities of its Defence Force, at a time of rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific.

Australia is also developing hypersonic missiles as part of a defence technology partnership with the US and UK, and will start producing guided missiles with Washington next year.
