Prime Minister receives Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong

On the afternoon of August 20, 2025, in Hanoi, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received the Australian Foreign Minister who was on an official visit to Vietnam and co-chaired the 7th Vietnam-Australia Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

On the afternoon of August 20, at the Government Office, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on the occasion of the Minister's official visit to Vietnam and co-chairing the 7th Vietnam - Australia Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomed Minister Penny Wong's return to Vietnam, highly appreciating the Minister's contributions and the effective cooperation between the two Foreign Ministries in promoting Vietnam - Australia relations.

The Prime Minister sent his regards to the Australian leaders and once again congratulated Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the Labor Party's victory in the May 2024 General Election; and expressed his wish to welcome Prime Minister Albanese back to Vietnam soon.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed his satisfaction with the strong and effective development of the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in most areas. The two countries have been implementing projects and cooperation activities set out in the Action Program on schedule.

Two-way trade turnover has achieved stable growth, with more than 14 billion USD in 2024. The two sides have actively opened their markets for each other's agricultural products.

Accordingly, Vietnamese passion fruit was exported to Australia for the first time and Australian plum was available in the Vietnamese market.

Registered FDI capital from Australia has exceeded 3 billion USD. The Prime Minister highly appreciated Australia's increase in ODA for Vietnam to 96.6 million AUD.

The Prime Minister emphasized that there is still a lot of room for cooperation between the two sides, and suggested continuing to effectively implement the Action Program to implement the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and periodically organizing dialogue and consultation mechanisms to increase understanding and strengthen political trust.

At the same time, the two sides need to actively discuss measures to promote higher growth in two-way trade turnover, soon reaching the target of 20 billion USD, especially by opening up and facilitating the export of goods.

The Prime Minister suggested that the two sides continue to promote the effectiveness and expand defense-security cooperation, especially in the fields of cyber security, digital transformation and equipment support to enhance Vietnam's capacity.

The Prime Minister also shared Vietnam's vision and strategy for science-technology development, innovation and digital transformation, hoping that the two sides will have breakthrough cooperation in this field, especially in human resource training and biomedical technology development...

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong congratulated the Prime Minister and expressed her honor to visit Vietnam on the occasion of the country's 80th anniversary.

She said that this is an important time for the two countries to look back on history and shape future cooperation; affirmed that the Australian Government highly values Vietnam's role in the region as well as the Vietnam-Australia relationship and wishes to exchange measures to develop the bilateral relationship more deeply, based on a common vision and viewpoint on bilateral, regional and international issues.

Thanking the Prime Minister for his attention, support and opinions on the Vietnam-Australia relationship, Minister Penny Wong affirmed that she will strive to promote the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, including further deepening defense-security cooperation, expanding science and technology cooperation, digital transformation and innovation, education and training, and human resource development through ODA projects and investment funds.

Minister Penny Wong pledged to strengthen coordination between the two countries, contributing to consolidating peace, stability and cooperation, respecting international law in the region, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace, stability, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation, and respecting international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS./.
