The original Broadway musical won a Tony Award in 1993 and was itself adapted from Manuel Puig's 1976 novel of the same name.
Kiss of the Spider Woman premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, receiving positive reviews from critics. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters in the US on October 10.
In terms of content, the work revolves around Valentin - a political prisoner who shares a cell with Molina - a decorator convicted of public indecency. Over time, the two form a strange bond when Molina recounts the plot of a Hollywood musical starring his favorite silver screen diva - Ingrid Luna played by Lopez.
This will be the first musical adaptation that Condon has both written and directed since Dreamgirls, which won two Oscars and starred Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson... in 2006.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is also said to be Jennifer Lopez's passion project for many years, as she is seen as the successor to the late Tony Award-winning artist and Puerto Rican icon, Chita Rivera - who originated the multifaceted role of Aurora or Ingrid Luna on Broadway.
The star and producer first teased the piece last December, saying: "This is my next musical in case people think of Selena as a musical. But Kiss of the Spider Woman is the real musical, where I actually get to play three different characters in a way. And so this is a big project for me."
Jennifer Lopez later shared that it was the music genre "where I got the idea of singing, dancing and acting, not just doing one thing".
