According to CNN , the Chenab arch bridge, completed after decades of construction, is located at an altitude of 359 meters above the river of the same name, 29 meters higher than the top of the Eiffel Tower and is the highest railway bridge in the world.
Costing more than $160 million to build and measuring 1,315 metres in length, the bridge is part of a rail link connecting Kashmir to the rest of India. The bridge was inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Apart from the Chenab bridge, Mr. Modi also attended the inauguration of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway project, which will connect key cities in Kashmir with the rest of the country.
For Mr Modi, infrastructure investments like the Chenab Bridge and the vast rail project are seen as powerful tools to promote social integration.
Mr Modi's government has poured billions of dollars into upgrading India's aging, outdated transport network as part of its vision to make the country a developed nation by 2047.
These ambitious projects include the construction of a series of tunnels and highways in the Himalayan mountains, which have drawn criticism from some environmentalists, who say the large-scale construction could damage an already fragile landscape that is already suffering from the effects of the climate crisis.
