A cave in the famous scenic area of Zhangjiajie, Hunan province (China) has caused public outrage when it was discovered to be filled with household waste and dirty water that had accumulated for many years.

According to locals, inside the cave there are plastic bottles produced 10 years ago. Inside the giant pile of garbage is as high as a 7-story house and gives off a strong stench.

According to Red Star News , the cave is located in Duong Gia Pha village, Thong Tan Pho town, Tu Loi district. This is a limestone cave formed by karst geology, with a vertical depth of about 150m.

Currently, the cave is filled with long-standing garbage and wastewater. Due to recent heavy rains, dirty water has overflowed, affecting the surrounding environment.

According to a volunteer who participated in the cleanup, during the cleanup, the group discovered plastic bottles that had been manufactured a long time ago. Inside the cave, trash was overflowing to the mouth of the cave. To get down to clean up, each member had to tie a rope to climb down.

Nearly 1.5 tons of trash were pulled out of the cave.

According to initial investigation results, the situation of littering and dumping waste into the cave has been going on for about 6 years. This situation is due to some livestock farming households living nearby secretly dumping waste here.

Currently, the government is sending forces to clean up, using garbage bags to pull up the trash in batches. Because the cave is deep in the mountains and the terrain is difficult, the treatment will take time.

An official from Tu Loi district said that the government has requested a comprehensive inspection of the entire district. Special attention should be paid to caves near residential areas and low-lying areas.

If pollution is detected, localities must immediately report and propose a solution. Inspections are being conducted throughout the region to protect the ecological environment.

According to Chinese media, up to now, nearly 1.5 tons of garbage have been pulled from the cave. Many people expressed their anger when a cave that was formed over millions of years of geological formation, should be preserved as a natural beauty spot, and become a valuable scientific research site. Instead, this place has become a garbage dumping ground for many years without anyone discovering it.

This makes the public wonder why the littering situation that has lasted for many years has not been detected by authorities during environmental inspections?

A representative of Tu Loi district said that relevant units are checking and reviewing the entire process. If any violations or cover-ups are discovered, they will certainly be held accountable. Currently, 3 livestock farming households are under investigation for illegal discharge.

At the end of May, the environmental risk management working group of Tu Loi district officially announced the handling of the remaining waste. As of June 3, the district government said that the garbage cleaning work is still in progress. The specific amount of waste processed will be announced later.

To assess the long-term impact of waste and wastewater on the cave ecosystem, the district also invited experts and independent assessment units to participate. The survey results will be made public.

Zhangjiajie Scenic Area was recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage since 1992.

This area is famous for its majestic limestone mountains, thousands of towering vertical stone pillars, and stunning landscapes of deep valleys and lush green forests. This place is known as a paradise on earth or a fairyland on earth.

Currently, Vietnamese tourists to Zhangjiajie have many options for transportation. The most convenient of which is the direct flight from Hanoi to Zhangjiajie.
