“28 Years Later: Post-Apocalyptic” delves into the inner struggles of human beings

“28 Years Later: Post-Apocalypse” (original title “28 Years Later”) is the third film, following “28 Days Later” (2002), “28 Weeks Later” (2007) about the zombie pandemic ravaging England. Besides thrilling chases, the film delves into the inner battle between letting go and surviving, keeping humanity or defying everything…

The movie is showing in theaters nationwide.

This part is independent of the previous two parts, set in England 28 years after most of the human population was turned into zombies by a virus. The survivors are clustered on an isolated island, connected to the mainland by a small path, easily covered by the tide. The people here do not have modern weapons, only using bows and arrows for self-defense and hunting.

Spike and his father in the fight for survival.

There, there is a 12-year-old boy named Spike, who was taken to the mainland by his father to explore the world and practice hunting zombies. Luckily, he survived and returned, and Spike is determined to take his sick mother to the mainland to find a famous doctor to cure her. Once again, Spike embarks on a dangerous journey...

If the first half of the film is a dramatic adventure of Spike and his father with thrilling chases and actions, the second half of the film is a touching story about motherly love. Although he protected his mother from the violent zombies and met the doctor, the boy could not protect her from illness and separation from life and death. The boy seemed to mature after a night of loss and separation; at the same time, he decided not to return to the island but to embark on a new journey. This will make the audience wonder and ponder. Perhaps, disappointed in his father's change and understanding the boundaries of life and death, hope and letting go after real experiences and the doctor's advice, Spike chose an independent path for himself.

No longer an old-fashioned zombie escape movie, “28 Years Later: Post-Apocalypse” has expanded the theme of survival into a profound look at society and how people deal with memories and the future. The director makes viewers sympathize with the precarious, tense state of the survivors through many situations, details and character psychology. Spike’s father, mother, the doctor, the special forces soldier or even the bloodthirsty zombies, all have reasons for their actions and choices. Although their choices sometimes make viewers disagree or question. Like the way Spike’s mother delivered a pregnant zombie and protected the uninfected child to the end; the way she chose to give up the world when she learned she had a terminal illness. Or Spike prevented his father from killing the zombie child when they had already defeated its parents. Like the doctor only paralyzed the zombies with anesthesia but did not kill them. Or the young special forces soldier, despite his foul mouth, wholeheartedly protects and helps Spike and his mother... Those situations show the humane side, humanity in a desolate setting. In addition, the film has many layers of meaning and is rich in metaphors about British culture and politics .

The horror element is still guaranteed even though the latter part of the film is more psychological. The zombies are no longer wandering, slow or mindless, but have now evolved into many strange shapes, even more intelligent. Sometimes, they also have emotions like humans and are governed by pain, hunger and survival instinct. The acting of the actors is the strong point of the film, especially the child actor Alfie Williams as Spike, who mastered his emotions and portrayed the character's inner thoughts well.

The film has a rather surprising ending with the appearance of a group of strange people with high fighting ability, they become companions of the boy Spike, opening up the next parts of the film...
