21 days and nights saving a patient stung more than 120 times by wasps

On July 27, news from Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just saved the life of a patient who had been stung more than 120 times by wasps. When admitted to the hospital, the patient had multiple organ damage and was at high risk of death.

Specifically, on July 6, the hospital received patient PVT (68 years old, residing in Hung Phu commune, Phuoc Long district, Bac Lieu) who was stung more than 120 times by wasps all over his body. According to the patient's family, Mr. T. was accidentally stung by wasps, and his family had to use mosquito spray to rescue the patient from the swarm of hundreds of bees surrounding him.

Mr. T. was rushed to Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital for emergency care by his relatives. The patient was admitted with difficulty breathing, rapid pulse, high blood pressure, hives all over his body, and numerous bee stings on his head, face, shoulders, back, and both arms. The sting sites were swollen, red, and painful.

Emergency doctors immediately diagnosed this as a severe bee sting. The patient was resuscitated, treated for anaphylactic shock, and given the necessary tests.

Test results showed that the patient had begun to have a severe blood clotting disorder and multiple organ damage. The patient was urgently consulted and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for treatment.

Recognizing that this was a severe bee sting that would cause anaphylactic shock, multiple organ damage, and a high risk of death, doctors quickly combined many measures including: Optimal medical treatment, blood filtration to absorb toxins, plasma exchange, and continuous blood filtration (CRRT), with the hope of helping the patient escape the critical condition.

During the treatment, the patient's respiratory failure progressed, sometimes requiring non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Severe acute kidney injury due to bee toxins always has many potential complications, which can take the patient's life at any time.

After 21 days and nights of intensive treatment, the patient's health is now stable, no longer tired or short of breath. The sting site has reduced pain, swelling, and multiple organ damage. In particular, the acute kidney injury is gradually recovering well.

Dr. Nguyen Hoang Duyen, Deputy Head of the Department of Emergency Resuscitation, Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital, said that wasp venom is very toxic and dangerous. In the case of patient T. being stung by a large number of wasps, if not treated promptly and actively, he could quickly fall into a state of multi-organ damage and death.

Through the above case, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Duyen recommends that the types of bees that often sting people are honeybees, wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets. After stinging, the substances in bee venom cause allergic reactions, anaphylactic shock, platelet aggregation, and capillary blockage, damage to many organs, leading to liver failure, kidney failure, and possibly death in the long term. Therefore, when stung by a bee, in addition to treating the wound at the site and relieving pain, the person stung by a bee needs to be monitored and detected for other acute complications that can be life-threatening. When stung by a bee, there are symptoms of hives, itching, difficulty breathing, severe pain, dizziness, fatigue, facial swelling, hematuria, etc., it is necessary to immediately call an ambulance or take the person to a medical facility for examination, diagnosis, and timely treatment by a doctor.
