As the leading medical facility in the province with a large number of patients coming for examination and inpatient treatment, in recent times, Ha Tinh Provincial General Hospital has made efforts to promote digital transformation, applying IT in operations, professional management and medical examination and treatment, including early implementation of electronic prescriptions. Since the beginning of 2023, with the support of information technology units, the Provincial General Hospital has deployed the construction of a process for implementing electronic prescriptions instead of the previous manual form.

Now, after the examination, doctors will prescribe medication electronically, the prescription is connected to the national prescription system and all departments in the hospital, integrated with the patient's electronic health record. Each prescription has a barcode system, when going to the pharmacy to scan the barcode, it can display information about the patient and information about the drugs.

Pharmacist CKII Bui Hoang Duong - Head of Pharmacy Department - Provincial General Hospital said: "The hospital has implemented electronic prescriptions early. In practice, it has brought many benefits to doctors, people and drug sales staff such as helping to significantly reduce errors in the medical examination and treatment process due to reading and writing incorrect information by hand; doctors directly enter drug information into the computer, helping to significantly improve the doctor's work efficiency and shorten waiting time for patients.

In particular, when using electronic prescriptions, the system will have the function of storing and sharing information about the patient's medical records, treatment history and information about the drugs that the patient has used or is using. This not only helps doctors easily look up and search for patient information quickly but also increases the connection between medical facilities at all levels.

Thach Ha Medical Center is also one of the units that early implemented electronic prescription. In addition to doctors and nurses prescribing at the center, all medical stations under the center have also implemented electronic prescription, thereby creating synchronous connectivity.

Dr. Duong Duc Anh - Deputy Head of the Department of Traditional Medicine - Rehabilitation, Thach Ha Medical Center said: "The implementation of electronic prescriptions with digital signatures has created many conveniences for doctors and patients. Now, patients no longer have to worry about losing prescriptions due to manual prescriptions as before, but doctors can send them directly via smartphone to patients for storage and lookup. Other specialized departments can easily monitor the patient's treatment process and regimen through the prescription stored in the health record, thereby coordinating to provide the optimal regimen, avoiding drug contraindications."

According to the direction of the Ministry of Health in Circular 26/2025/TT-BYT regulating prescriptions and prescriptions of pharmaceuticals and biological products in outpatient treatment at medical examination and treatment facilities, from October 1, 2025, hospitals must prescribe drugs electronically. Under the strong direction of the Department of Health, up to now, all hospitals and medical centers in the area have implemented electronic prescriptions. According to the assessment of medical facilities, the application of electronic prescriptions not only limits incorrect recording and misunderstanding of prescriptions, saves time for doctors and patients, makes it easy to look up and share patient health information, but also reduces risks and drug interactions, and limits overprescription thanks to the feature of controlling and monitoring drug prescriptions.

According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Dung - Deputy Head of the Medical Affairs Department, Department of Health, Ha Tinh is currently vigorously implementing the construction of electronic medical records in accordance with the direction of the Prime Minister and the Provincial People's Committee. The implementation of electronic prescriptions is a step in the entire process of building electronic medical records. Electronic prescriptions bring many benefits to patients and medical facilities, but also require people to change their habits to exploit the convenience of prescriptions. At the same time, medical facilities also need to strengthen propaganda and provide thorough instructions to people to use electronic prescriptions effectively.
