Zubimendi joins Arsenal for nearly 70 million euros

This is the first contract under new Sports Director Andrea Berta, opening an ambitious summer transfer window for the "Gunners".

After rejecting Liverpool in the summer of 2024 and receiving special attention from Real Madrid under coach Xabi Alonso, Zubimendi finally chose to join Arsenal. Coach Mikel Arteta was the key factor in convincing the Spanish international - who is expected to become the "Rodri version" in the tactical scheme at Emirates.

Zubimendi will be reunited with former teammates Martin Ødegaard and Mikel Merino - a contract that Arsenal recruited from Sociedad last summer for 32 million euros. At Emirates, Zubimendi promises to be the perfect piece alongside Declan Rice, Ødegaard and Merino, especially in the context of Jorginho moving to Flamengo and Thomas Partey also leaving the club.

The 26-year-old midfielder, a 15-time Spain international, is known for his ability to win the ball back, intercept and initiate attacks - qualities that Arteta is desperate to improve in midfield.

Arsenal are also looking for a new striker, with Alexander Isak, Benjamin Šeško, Viktor Gyökeres and Nico Williams among their targets. Meanwhile, extending the contracts of Bukayo Saka and William Saliba - both of whom expire in 2027 - is also a priority.

Arsenal's total spending in the summer of 2025 is expected to exceed 200 million euros, in an effort to realize its ambition to conquer the Premier League and reach Europe next season.
