The center of attention and controversy of this parade is the Bach Hoa Bo Hanh group (active since 2022, more than 42,000 followers on Facebook) which organized a group of young people to parade in traditional Vietnamese costumes, but in the Royal palanquin carrying block, they wore am cong costumes (costumes for people carrying coffins).
A series of harshly critical comments on social media platforms, saying that this is unacceptable, because the mistake is too obvious. And this is a public event, inaccurate images will unintentionally spread an incorrect perspective on the country's history and culture. The opinions given are too obvious and it is difficult to find a reason to justify this mistake. But first of all, it is necessary to recognize that when young people still love and seek out historical values, heritage, and culture, it is certainly a good sign. Because the value of a hundred years or a thousand years, no matter how good and beautiful it is, if there is no one to receive and inherit it, all the beautiful things will no longer have meaning. But the transmission must maintain the spirit and value of the origin.
Over the years, “revival” projects (meaning restoring and attempting to recreate ancient artifacts, rituals and customs) have broken out of a temporary fad, becoming a trend and a value for people to seek out and create their own identity and character of the Vietnamese people. This encouraging sign also faces many difficulties, as many projects only stop at costumes and are mostly imitations (close to the original), but cannot be restored (exactly like the original).
Culture is expressed in many aspects of life, a flow from the past to the present. If we are too hasty, we can easily fall into a state of "retrospection" on the surface without dealing with deeper issues. Traditional costumes do not stop at the physical aspect (fabric, color, pattern) but also include spiritual meanings (on what occasions to wear, space and light conditions for the material to fully reveal its inherent beauty...). Currently, very few people are interested in these questions and more or less lead to mistakes like the recent event in Hue .
Loving the values of our country's cultural heritage cannot be hasty and even more so, we cannot blame. Looking at the mistakes of today's youth, we can see that the responsibility lies with us, when there is no common database, or a team of experts with unified views and documents to support and enlighten young people to find the good and beautiful values of our nation, but the distance between us can be up to thousands of years of history.
