Handling unsafe traffic points on Highway 6

National Highway 6 through the province has steep and winding mountain passes, such as Cun, Thung Khe, and Thung Nhuoi, with limited visibility and a constant risk of traffic accidents if one is negligent, subjective, or loses vigilance. Recently, there have been particularly serious traffic accidents recorded at some sections such as: Km145 + 200 - Km145 + 500 (Dong Tan commune, Mai Chau district); Km109 + 800 - Km110 + 800 (Phong Phu commune, Tan Lac district). Authorities have proposed and implemented specific solutions to overcome the traffic safety situation at these sections.

National Highway 6, Trong Bridge area, Phong Phu commune (Tan Lac), has a steep slope and is often slippery. There were 2 serious traffic accidents in early December 2024.

According to the report of the authorities, the section from Km145+000 - Km148+000 on National Highway 6 running through Tam Hoa hamlet, Dong Tan commune, the section running through Hang Kia - Pa Co Nature Reserve is a steep and winding pass area, with an average longitudinal slope of i = 6% - 8%. In winter, the rainy season is often foggy, the road surface is slippery, posing a potential risk of traffic safety loss. From June to July 10, 2024, the section from Km145+000 - Km147+000 had 5 road traffic accidents, killing 3 people, injuring 3 people, and damaging 6 vehicles.

The provincial police have reviewed and recommended: on National Highway 6, Dong Tan Commune, Mai Chau District, a new black spot has appeared from Km145+200 - Km145+500, 3 traffic accidents have occurred, killing 2 people, injuring 2 people, causing property damage of over 90 million VND. In addition, there is an unreasonable point in traffic organization at Km147 - Km148, 2 traffic accidents have occurred, killing 1 person, injuring 1 person, causing property damage of over 120 million VND.

National Highway 6, Trong Bridge area, Phong Phu commune, Tan Lac district is also a black spot for traffic safety. In early December 2024, at Km110+032, National Highway 6 had 2 consecutive traffic accidents that killed 4 people. The area where the accident occurred is a steep, curved road with limited visibility, slippery road surface, large traffic volume, moving at high speed. The functional sector and local authorities have proposed to competent authorities to implement specific solutions to overcome the traffic safety situation on sections of National Highway 6.

To improve the effectiveness of ensuring traffic safety and order and preventing road traffic accidents in Hoa Binh province in the coming time, the provincial police requested the Vietnam Road Administration to synthesize and report to overcome and handle black spots according to regulations. In the immediate future, it is proposed to install signs limiting the speed to 50 km/h and to carry out construction to expand the roadbed and surface to handle black spots.

According to the Department of Construction, in the first 5 months of 2025, the traffic safety situation in the area has changed positively. The whole province had 66 traffic accidents, killing 40 people and injuring 49 people. Compared to the same period in 2024, there were 51 fewer cases (66/117 cases), 11 fewer deaths (40/55 people) and 60 fewer injuries (49/109 people).

However, the traffic safety situation in the province still has some limitations such as: low awareness of law compliance among traffic participants; rapid increase in traffic volume; although the road traffic system has been renovated and upgraded, it has not yet fully met the travel demand. On National Highway 6 and Ho Chi Minh Road, many black spots and potential new traffic accident risks have emerged.

The Provincial Traffic Safety Committee requested members and relevant agencies to review black spots and potential traffic accident spots on the routes, focusing on National Highway 6 and Ho Chi Minh Road. It recommended that the Ministry of Construction and the Vietnam Road Administration thoroughly handle black spots at Km105 - Km121, Km145 - Km148 on National Highway 6. At the same time, organize propaganda on lessons learned from past traffic accidents and congestions; warn about behaviors, areas, weather and environmental situations with high risk of traffic accidents.
