People in Dong Nang hamlet, Dong Bac commune (Kim Boi) prepare land for the new cucumber crop.
With an agricultural land area of nearly 30 hectares, people in the village have changed their farming practices, switching from ineffective rice cultivation to annual crops with high economic value such as dragon fruit, cucumber, melon, longan, etc., bringing stable income and improving their lives.
Dong Nang Hamlet has 102 households with 165 people, of which over 90% are Muong ethnic people. Although there are still 10 poor households and 3 near-poor households, compared to previous years, this rate has decreased sharply. Hamlet chief Dinh Cong Tinh said: "Dong Nang has met the new rural criteria by 2024, but the general situation still has many difficulties, especially in terms of employment. Therefore, crop conversion has become a practical direction to increase income and improve livelihoods for people".
From depending on summer-autumn rice and winter-spring rice, many households have boldly switched to growing dragon fruit - a plant that is not popular locally but has high economic efficiency. Currently, nearly 10 households in the village grow dragon fruit on an area of 1,000 - 2,000 m², with an annual income of 100 - 200 million VND. A typical example is Mr. Bui Van Binh's household with 2,000 m² of land converted to grow dragon fruit, with an annual income of over 200 million VND. Or Mr. Bui Van Tinh's household grows both dragon fruit and cucumbers, with a combined income of over 100 million VND/year. In addition, households such as Mr. Bui Van Minh and Ms. Pham Thi Hanh also effectively exploit over 1,000 m² of agricultural land, earning an income of about 100 million VND/year.
In this year’s cucumber crop, many households have chosen to grow this crop instead of rice, bringing about clear results. Some households earn nearly 60 million VND/crop from cucumbers, a much higher income than before when they were still growing rice.
Currently, the hamlet's seasonal agricultural land area is about 21 hectares. The conversion not only brings economic efficiency but also contributes to the formation of concentrated agricultural production areas, connecting with Ranh market - a traditional market right in the hamlet. Ranh market meets 5 times a month, becoming a bustling agricultural trading place between Dong Nang and neighboring communes.
Besides farming, people in Dong Nang hamlet also develop livestock and services, and nearly ten households have children working abroad - a potential resource contributing to the development of the household economy.
Along with economic development, people in the hamlet actively carry out the campaign "All people unite to build a cultural life" with many remarkable results. People proactively contribute to building various funds. Especially, in the construction of new rural areas, whenever there is a policy of donating land, contributing working days or funds, people always carry it out with high consensus and unanimity.
The mass organizations in the hamlet also play a good role in propagating and mobilizing people to comply with the village rules and practice civilized lifestyles in weddings, funerals and festivals. Cultural, artistic and sports activities are always maintained regularly, contributing to building a rich spiritual life and connecting the community.
To achieve this result, in addition to the people's constant efforts, there is also an important role of local authorities in propaganda work, production transformation orientation, technical support and mobilizing people to participate in patriotic emulation movements...
