WWF supports Quang Tri to conserve Saola species in Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve

The People's Committee of Quang Tri province has just issued Decision No. 3164/QD-UBND dated December 23, 2024 approving the project "Sao la species conservation" in Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve sponsored by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

With a total non-refundable aid capital of 27,584 USD, equivalent to nearly 665 million VND and implementation period until the end of December 2025, the Project is associated with the goal of discovering and conserving Saola species in the wild in Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve, Quang Tri province.

Project activities include: training to improve capacity for Saola survey using camera traps for staff of Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve; conducting two Saola surveys using 120 targeted camera traps in priority areas of Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve; 1,600 posters and student notebooks with Saola conservation messages were distributed to students and communities in the buffer zone of Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve.

It is known that Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve (located in the West of Quang Tri), has an area of 23,456.7 hectares including 5 communes in the North of Huong Hoa district, adjacent to the Lao border. This is the place with the highest terrain in Quang Tri with two prominent high peaks including Sa Mu peak (1,570 m) and Voi Mep peak (1,775 m).

Through the implementation of the program of investigation and monitoring of some endangered, precious and rare animals and birds in 2021-2022, the Reserve used 80 camera traps for investigation. The results recorded specific and vivid images and videos of 32 species with 18 species of animals and 14 species of birds. Many of these species are listed in the World Red Book and Vietnam Red Book.

Currently, 1,327 species of vascular plants belonging to 158 families have been recorded. Of these, 195 are endangered, precious, and rare species such as Dinh Tung, Hoang Dan Gia, Bay La Mot Hoa, Lan Pa Coi Dai Coil... There are 935 animal species, 110 mammal species, 208 bird species, 81 reptile and amphibian species, 33 fish species, 503 insect species, and 97 are endangered, precious, and rare.
