1. Exactly 100 years ago today, June 21, 1925, Thanh Nien Newspaper, the organ of the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association, with Nguyen Ai Quoc as editor-in-chief and writer, published its first issue, marking the birth of Vietnam's revolutionary press. Since then, Vietnam's revolutionary press has always been closely associated with, accompanied by, and contributed to the revolutionary cause initiated and led by our Party. Also a journalist, throughout his life, President Ho Chi Minh always paid attention to and nurtured generations of Vietnamese revolutionary reporters and journalists. Speaking about the goal of revolutionary journalism, he spoke at the 2nd Congress of the Vietnam Journalists Association (April 1959): “Regarding the content of writing, you guys call it “theme”, all the articles I wrote had only one theme, which was to fight against colonialism, imperialism, feudalism, and landlords, to propagate national independence and socialism. That is my fate with the press”. He also taught that our regime is a democratic regime, and thoughts must be free. On an issue, everyone expresses their opinions to contribute to finding the truth. When everyone has reached a consensus and found the truth, then democratic freedom becomes the freedom to obey the truth. The truth is what is beneficial to the Fatherland and the People. What is contrary to the interests of the Fatherland and the People is not the truth. He also taught: “If you do not know clearly, do not understand clearly, do not speak, do not write. If there is nothing to say, nothing to write, do not speak, do not write nonsense”. With press agencies, Uncle Ho also taught that they must have a firm political stance. Politics must be mastered, the correct political line must be followed before other things can be correct. Therefore, our press must have a correct political line. In 1965, in a congratulatory telegram to the Asian-African Journalists Association, Uncle Ho wrote: "For us journalists, the pen is a sharp weapon, the article is a revolutionary proclamation". With domestic journalists, Uncle Ho reminded: "Press cadres are also revolutionary soldiers. The pen and paper are sharp weapons. Your pen is also a sharp weapon in your career of supporting the righteous and eliminating evil"...
At the 2nd Congress of the Vietnam Journalists Association (April 16, 1959), President Ho Chi Minh emphasized: Our press is not for a small number of readers, but to serve the people, to propagate and explain the Party and Government 's guidelines and policies, so it must have a mass character and fighting spirit.
It can be affirmed that, under the guidance and leadership of the Party and Uncle Ho, Thanh Nien Newspaper and generations of the first proletarian journalists bravely and actively propagated Marxism-Leninism in Vietnam, creating a very important ideological and organizational start for the birth of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1930, contributing to rallying the masses so that the people of the whole country, under the leadership of the Party and the core force of the Viet Minh, rose up, made the great August Revolution, took power into the hands of the people, and established the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. During the great resistance wars to gain and maintain national independence, many generations of journalists were not afraid of hardships and sacrifices, were directly present at the front lines, tasted the hardships, promptly reflected the fighting spirit, and encouraged our army and people to unite to repel foreign invaders. During the resistance war against the US, the secret revolutionary newspapers that infiltrated the enemy contributed to the great victory of the Spring of 1975, completely liberating the South and unifying the country. Peace was restored, and the press nationwide continued to perform its role excellently, bringing the Vietnamese revolutionary line in the new period to all classes of people in all parts of the country; reflecting the rich and creative reality of each locality and each sector, pointing out the difficulties and irrationalities in the socio-economic life that need to be heard and truly cared for, contributing to promptly resolving socio-economic concerns, removing bottlenecks, encouraging and motivating creative examples who dare to think, dare to do, and bring high efficiency... contributing to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland in the new period.
2. Today, when our country has achieved great achievements, developed comprehensively, and is respected and highly appreciated by friends at home and abroad, the revolutionary cause will always face opportunities mixed with challenges. The role of the revolutionary press is increasingly important in propagating and disseminating the guidelines, laws, policies and guidelines of the Party and State; in promoting the right to mastery and protecting the legitimate interests of the people; in building Vietnamese culture and people, promoting the great national unity bloc; in encouraging and honoring the good, the beautiful, the progressive; condemning the bad, the evil; fighting bureaucracy, corruption, waste, stagnation... and all that is harmful to the national interest. Especially in the fight against corruption, waste, negativity and social evils, the press nationwide has promoted its pioneering role, clearly demonstrating the people's supervisory function. The information content of the press is increasingly rich, effective, beautiful, vivid and attractive. Thanks to the innovation initiated and led by our Party, the press has made great strides in quality and quantity. From a few dozen press agencies in the first days of taking power, there are now hundreds of press agencies, press publications, 2 national radio and television stations, dozens of regional radio and television stations, 63 radio and television stations in provinces and cities. The electronic press and online press team has developed strongly together with internet service providers, creating a vibrant electronic press information network that attracts millions of visitors every day. Along with the strong development of the press, the team of journalists has developed rapidly, to date the whole country has about 15,000 journalist members... It is the team of journalists who have brought the press deep into real life, discovered, introduced, and promoted new economic models, new ways of doing business, new factors, good people, good deeds; clearly expressed the viewpoint of protecting and promoting national cultural identity and traditions, propagating and encouraging the entire population to selectively promote the advanced cultures of countries around the world, contributing to raising people's knowledge, preventing bad cultures from infiltrating Vietnam...
With the special mission entrusted by the Party and the people, each press agency and each journalist must continue to maintain their core role in building a healthy information environment with the mainstream being positive information, creating an atmosphere of trust and excitement to successfully organize Party Congresses at all levels towards the 14th National Party Congress. Continue to attach importance to the work of Party building and rectification in press agencies. Improve political and ideological education, encourage journalists to constantly cultivate political qualities, practice moral qualities, and promote the mission of journalists. Promote the exemplary role of cadres and party members, especially leaders; resolutely fight against signs of degradation in political ideology, ethics, lifestyle, "self-evolution", "self-transformation" within the organization. Press agencies must strengthen activities to foster moral qualities, political qualities and professional skills for journalists nationwide in the context of increasingly rich, diverse and vibrant media and social life with many new and complex issues arising in press activities...
Promoting the glorious tradition of 100 years of Vietnamese Revolutionary Journalism, entering a new era with the country, an era of the Vietnamese people's rise, the team of journalists will constantly train their political will, improve their professional qualifications, uphold professional ethics, strengthen solidarity, join hands, and strive to build a professional, modern, combative, and humane journalism for the benefit of the country and people; steadily move forward with the country, worthy of the trust of the Party, the State, and the people in journalists.
The country's achievements in nearly 40 years of implementing the renovation process are great. The new era is opening up a bright future for the nation. The new era also sets new and higher requirements for revolutionary journalism, requiring the press to develop accordingly, grow together with the nation, and be worthy of a professional, humane, and modern journalism.
General Secretary To Lam.
