Ramsdale is back to playing at the top level in the Premier League. |
According to Sky Sports , Ramsdale has been allowed to undergo a medical today to finalise the deal. At 27, Ramsdale has experienced relegation three times with Southampton, Sheffield and Bournemouth.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper was Arsenal's number one goalkeeper just two seasons ago. However, the arrival of David Raya has pushed him into a reserve role at the Emirates Stadium. In the summer of 2024, Ramsdale joined Southampton and was relegated. However, the opportunity to return to the Premier League came quite early for this goalkeeper as Newcastle wanted to add quality to their goalkeeping.
The Magpies had initially targeted Burnley's James Trafford. The north-east club had agreed a £31m deal with Burnley. However, Trafford's former club Manchester City activated a buy-back clause for the same fee, completing the deal earlier this week.
Trafford became the most expensive English goalkeeper with a total contract value of up to 31 million pounds, surpassing the old record of Jordan Pickford (30 million pounds from Sunderland to Everton in 2017).
Ramsdale's move to Newcastle was a strategic move by manager Eddie Howe, as number one goalkeeper Nick Pope continues to suffer injuries. Howe's aim is not to replace Pope, but to create healthy competition in goal.
